Has anyone had any problems with putting serious
horsepower through the standard LSD (about
250-300Hp)??
If so can something else be fitted eg. an RX-4 diff??

MX-5 diff
Apparently parts can be had from an early RX-7 diff, however I doubt this
would increase its power handling ability as they are very similar I
believe. Ray have more knowledge of this - Ray? I think it would depend on
exactly which diff it was that you had - also, I think there are weaker
drive train components than the diff.
Try http://members.aol.com/solomiata//MiataVLSD.html There is lots of parts
exchange and performance information on this site. Also, the list at
miatapower.com might be able to answer this.
I don't think there are many (any?) people in NZ putting out that kind of
rear wheel hp.

You dont say what year your car is...
1.6's came with a diff with a six inch ring gear... The standard LSD
in this size was a viscous type LSD.
Many people who've turbo'd their 1.6 have blown this diff, even with
only mild power upgrades...
The 1.8 got an upgraded diff with a seven inch ring gear. It is much
stronger and reports of dammage have been much less frequent. The
standard LSD in this size is a Torsen, which is a far superior product
for many reasons apart from just the greater strength from increased
size...
Many Americans have upgraded from the 6" to 7" with torsen. It
requires more than just the diff housing and internals. I beleive
axel-drive shafts and possibly other bits are required too. Best to
see the garage section at www.miata.net for details. Bear in mind
that the diff ratios were changed between 1.6 and 1.8. This will
actually be a good thing if you are running 250+ HP, but your speedo
will be out...
Fletch.
