Red Touch-up Paint

Post by STANLEY, Murray » Thu Aug 10, 2000 12:40 pm

I find it amazing that I cannot obtain a small bottle of touch-up
paint for my red 1991 MX5. The Mazda dealership in Dunedin have nothing on
offer. I have previously had the local car painter make me up some (about
500ml) but this went off very quickly and is now a solid block of red gunk
in its container. I have also tried the touch-up paint offering from K-Mart
that was supposed to be for Mazdas between 1991 - 1995. However the colour
was not even close and so that was another waste of money.
Given that the paint on MX5s is amazingly thin and mine is always
getting dinged as people open their adjacent car doors onto it, there has
got to be something available surely. Is there a touch-up paint for a
different breed of vehicle that is the same as the MX5 red? What do others
do?

Cheers

Red Touch-up Paint

Well - don't tell anyone, but I do minor touch ups with a black waterproof
marker pen. Works great on Blacks, but looks a bit funny on reds. ;)

I have had touch up paint made up before by a local panelbeaters, and I keep
it in the fridge. Seems to make it last a bit longer. He just popped a
tiny bit in the bottom of a small container - and charged me nothing.

Not sure where to get the original stuff from sorry, I'm sure there are
paint outlets that have it somewhere, but I know that Mazda only makes touch
up paint kits for current models, so dealers won't have it unless the local
dealer has a deal with autocolour or dulux etc. - I do know that some US
dealers and aftermarket suppliers have it though.

If it was me, I'd get it made to match and just do a full touch up operation
once every 6 months or so - as your colour will have probably faded a bit
over the years.

H.

PS Take the k-mart one back and get a refund.
