Quick Trip round the South Island
Quick Trip round the South Island
Anyone interested in a quick one week trip round the South Island?
Starting from AK maybe Saturday. Probably staying at backpacker hostels.
No itinerary yet but Nelson, Lewis pass, Hanmer Springs, Christchurch
(Transalpine Day-trip?), Timaru, Lake Tekapo, Mt Cook, Wanaka,
Queenstown,(Te Anau, Milford Sound), Haast Pass, Franz Josef, Hokitika ( I
have fond memories of the enthusiastic traffic police there), Punakaiki
(pancake rock formations), Buller Gorge sounds a good start (up for
discussion). To do that lot in a week may be pushing it. I would also like
to see the new viaduct in Arthur's Pass if possible.
I'm hoping this really wet weather we are having in the SI will have blown
over by next week.
Getting across the ditch is a bit expensive ($325 for a car and 2 people on
the Lynx, around $270 on the InterIslander) but we should be able to get
across without booking.
Give me a call on 09 818 4650, 025 293 4589 or reply on the list or to
clive.granger@paradise.net.nz.

Quick Trip round the South Island
Hi Clive .. what a great idea! Wish I could go, but work does not allow.
But I have to say, went to the viaduct early this year and it was just
awesome .. take a camera .. you'll get some great shots and watch out for
your door rubbers .. those keas are just as bad in real life as they are in
that tv commercial *lol*.
Have an awesome trip - I hope you get some takers to join you.

Clive-
would love to join you, but my boss says I'm indespensible.Must look that up.
I'm planning a similar trip in February...
Can thoroughly recommend the AA Tourist Park in Hanmer Springs - tell Roger I sent you. They say they're pretty full
but. SH 70 only has 10 kms unpaved now, very nice road, NZ 1940s. Look for the classic 1930's? Ford rusting under a
haybarn about half way.
If you get to the McKenzie country (Tekapo/Ohau etc) definitely get off the Tourist route and use the canal roads...
better scenery, less traffic, no cops (and no safety barriers between you and a canal deep enough to float a Cook Strait
ferry).
Hope you take a camera.
