Gidday people,
My name is Logan Sutton. I am a Graphic Design Director for a company
called I Print & Graphics in New Plymouth.
I have been logging onto the mx5 club web page regularly over the last 6
months or so.
I have been a motor head all my life. My father is a mechanic and my entire
family is into sports cars/roadsters, etc. I have a real interest in MX-5's
and have saved the money to purchase my first one.
However, when pricing around for insurance in the last couple of weeks, I
have come up with 0 results. I am 18 years old. Aparently I can't get
insurance because of my age. I have another thing against me I have lost my
licence once, but I have never had a claim. I am young and earning good
money and would like to be able to be insured to drive the car I have
always wanted. Why is this so hard to do???
Anyway, if anyone can help me out here. I would be much appreciated.
If all works out I'll have my mx-5 in less than a month, just in time for
summer, and will be joining up with the club.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Regards
Logan Sutton

INSURANCE???
Logan, the previous discussion is quite interesting, but all you will get out of it is that in the insurance industry variables such as age, gender, location , previous history, vehicle type and the insurance companies themselves can make the difference between quite reasonable rates and obscene amounts. I was in a similar situation a few years back. I was under 21 and trying to insure a Honda CRX (I was working my up to a mx5!). All of the major insurance companies I went to see refused to insure me (the rep from State even laughed in my face!!) even though I had a clean driving record. I did find a smaller insurance company that specialized in insuring "High risk" vehicles (sorry, forgot their name) who would cover me but the premiums were over $1500 a year (+ huge excess) and they had a list the length of your arm with conditions like the car must be alarmed and stored in a locked garage with sensor lighting etc etc. I eventually went through an insurance broker and they in!
sured me for around $1200 a year with the usual excess rates and the only requirement was an alarm (I eventually got away with just an immobilizer after I had to explain to them what it was- I hate alarm sirens with a passion!!). If you still can't find a broker who will insure you, you could always do the old trick of insuring the car under your fathers name and having yourself as a named driver.
