Shipping MX5s to Australia

Post by Matt Gunn » Mon Jun 18, 2001 3:19 am

Hi

As far as I'm aware you can ship your car over without too many worries, if
you have owned it for more than 3 months yourself. IE can't import cars
here and then off to OZ right away. The compliance should'nt be a problem
because there are a number of outfits importing hi spec Jap cars into
Australia at the present time.

Cost - I'm calling on a four year old verbal inquiry but it's in the 4-5
thousand range. Don't quote me !!

I was recently in OZ and saw an NRMA used car price guide. With 20000km's a
year average distance a 1991 MX5 will cost you around $20,000. The only
other problem is a distinct lack of numbers. We saw reasonable numbers of
the new shape , but only small numbers of the origional classic.

If I you own outright , or have nearly paid off your car it's probably
worth it. If you still owe on the car you may need to look closely at the
numbers

good luck

Shipping MX5s to Australia

I was wondering if anyone had any information on the shipping of MX5s over to
Australia?

We are thinking of moving to Oz, and have heard how expensive MX5s are over
there. Does anyone know if it's worth shipping ours over when we go, or does
it work out to be as expensive as buying one there anyway?

We love our MX and refuse to be without one, so we either ship ours or we'll
buy one over there!

Do you have all sorts of taxes to pay for importing the car into Oz etc?

The law for private importation in OZ is that you must own the car for
12months before shipping it over there. It used to be only 3 months but it
chnaged a while ago. You won't have to worry about compliancing if it is
going as a private import. There fore it won't have to meet their emmission
tests etc. I have looked into this as we are trying to sell our 20B Cosmo
over there. It will be cheaper to take your own car over there but I think
there is a lot of paper work involved. But you will save money.

Geraldine

I moved to Brisbane with my job in Dec last year. I looked into bringing my
91 MX5 but, even though work would've paid for the shipping, it was going to
be very expensive and time consuming. It also depends whether yours is an
import - mine is. The quotes I got for shipping were about NZ$1,500-2,000
which I didn't think was too bad. My boss brought his BMW over and told me
about all the problems he had (and his wasn't an import), and he gave me a
contact to speak to before I made a decision (but unfortunately I now don't
have his name or number). The guy I spoke to said that they don't like
imports over here and are very strict when bringing them in. Cars being
brought in are checked to make sure that they're road-worthy according to Oz
rules - and for the life of me I can't remember what they were! I know that
he said that MX5s he'd looked at before had to have had modifications done,
that were not cheap. I know when I added everything up (road tax, insurance
<more expensive than NZ>, probable modifications etc, it was going to work
out about AU$5,000, on top of the shipping. But if you're going to be
living here permanently (I'm only here for a total of 12-14 months) then it
might still be worth you bringing it over, as they are expensive. There are
not many around either, and the majority of seen have been the newer shape.
I've left mine in NZ and when I go home for visits I've always got my baby
to drive, which I always look forward to immensely (hard to believe how much
you can miss a car!).

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Shipping MX5s to Australia

Hi

I am in Auckland for a project that will last for about 14 months.

I have a 1992 Red MX5 in Sydney. For transport in Auckland I purchased
a 1992 Silver Eunos Roadster for way less than half the Sydney value in
equivalent dollars. Private sales range depending on condition but
expect $16,000 to $22,000 for M1 models. Mine was last valued at
$17,500 for a trade in on an M2, but I could get more on the private
market - I didn't sell.

I have been renovating the little silver lovely expressely to take back
home with me at the end of project.

There are rules associated with imports and they can be found on the
internet by searching for the Australian Customs site. Basically it is
very difficult to import an MX5 unless you follow the rules and you must
have owned and operated it for 12 months (the old 3 month rule has been
superseded). There are also import duties and GST to pay - (15%
customs, 10% GST approx on total including shipping).

The compliance plate would indicate Private Import and to be registered
will have to satisfy the requirements of whichever State Authority
applies.

My calculations of the total likely bill is that you can probably get
one to Australia for less than buying one there depending on the level
of specification and condition.

The other factor is how much do you love the one you are with...all
MX5's have individual personalities (my Red is definitely a male, and
the silver is a female).

As an aside, the population of MX5's in NZ appears to exceed that in
Sydney at least by a fair margin, in percentage of the vehicle fleet.
So unless you are involved in club outings you could form the view that
there are not as many M1's when in reality there are quite a few at most
times in the for sale columns.

I would advise you to consult with the most appropriate Australian MX5
Club (one in each state) and any sponsor companies (eg John Newell Mazda
in Sydney sponsors the NSW club and gives club discounts).

Good luck
Colin R

I dont have any info to add regarding the Australian regulations...

But, my '90 MX-5 is a New Zealand new one, not an imported Eunos Roadster.

It already has ADR compliance plates on it (Australian Design Rules).
(because NZ gets the same cars as specced by Mazda Australia. This was
confirmed by Mazda NZ at the launch of the new shape...)

This may well make importing it to Australia MUCH easier...

Seeing as the price difference between local cars and imports seemed to
disappear about 4 or 5 years ago... it might be worth seeking out a NZ new
model rather than trying to take the Jap import...

Fletch.
