turbo troubles

Post by Glen McLean » Sat Jun 09, 2001 3:59 pm

i have just fitted a new turbo and i am having a little trouble with lean
out.

the mazdaspeed injectors are only three months old. everything else is in
working order. the turbo kit (american) came with all the goodies, and easy
to follow fitment guide. it's only boosting to 18 p.s.i. and i have the
ability to turn it up to 29 p.s.i., the lean out will fry the piston tops
unless i do something. the fuel pressure is staying fine, the reg is
ajustable, (have fitted after-market jobby) . the motor has been rebuilt
three months ago too. the turbo shat itself so i got it rebuilt. now this .
aggghhh i wish i had bought a alfa.

Should have a programmable ecu, otherwise its all witchcraft getting your
fuel right under all conditions.

Try turning the boost down if you know its running lean, what size are your Mazdaspeed
injectors? who's kit is it? did it come with the Link? a high pressure fuel pump?
etc,
Ray :-)

whhhoooa there - 18psi?! 29psi?!?! what model turbo is it? who sold it to
you? Was is sold as a comprehensive kit, or did you build it from bits? I
joined the US miatapower list for interests sake, and haven't heard of too
many people running 18+ on an MX5. I assume the kit came with decent
intercooler, some brand of programmable ECU/boost control/knock sensing?
Most people that I have seen running controlled boost that high on an MX5 or
323GTX are close to or using forged pistons, crank, modified C/R etc

if you are running lean, then are you sure the injectors they supplied were
the correctly rated ones for that application? What cc do they flow? Have
you tuned the car on a dyno and modified the ECU settings? Your fuel press
gauge reads fine? I would have thought you'd need an more powerful or aux
fuel pump for that much flow?!

I'd look at the miatapower list if I was you...

zorruno, I think his numbers will be absolute, not relative to atmospheric,
so subtract 14-15psi from them to get actual manifold pressure above
atmospheric.

Ahh yes - whoops - makes sense now, sub 14.7

Still, should be a rocket once you get the injectors flowing correctly Glen!
Hopefully we'll see it at the AGM this month?
