Hi Char and welcome,
its always difficult to pin noises down without actually hearing them, it could be
the exhaust touching somewhere or it could be the drive shafts, sometimes you get
a clicking from the brake pads, does it only happen in reverse? and not in 1st gear?
you really need to look under the car or have someone look for you, to see if there's
anything obvious, you will get a lot of help from the people here i'm sure.
Ray :-)

Are you sure it is the back wheels? The symptoms you mention sound very
similar to something I have noticed on my car but it comes from the front
wheels and transmits through the steering wheel. It only happens when the
car is on full lock (forward or reverse) and feels like I am driving over a
series of pot holes. As soon as I unwind the lock a bit, the sensation
stops. I have had the car many years but have only recently noticed this
and was somewhat alarmed. I have since had it checked out and the local
mechanic tells me that this is normal and is due to tyre scrub at very acute
wheel angles.

Naturally if someone is going to get under the car to check it out while it
is moving it should be someone else :-)

RE:Murray Stanley, knocking noise.

I have the same thing as you with my mx5. i.e. The front end gives a real bump
or something whenever the front wheels are at full lock. Have not had the car
all that long and it sure gave my a fright first time it happened. The "tire
scrub" explanation sounds a bit vague, why has the car not always done it.
When you first noticed it, had you just changed size or type of tyres? Be
interested to know?

Cheers

Mike,
The thing that has changed recently is the place where I live. I have been
living in a motel for the past couple of months and it requires a bit tight
manoeuvring some mornings to get my car out of the car park (when the place
is full with lots of other guests) and this is when I first noticed it.
Possibly the reason I have never noticed it before is because I did not have
to manoeuvre my car like that when I was at home.
The mechanic who reassured me is the local Mazda agent and he has an MX5
himself. He told me that this phenomenon also used to occur on Triumph
Heralds which apparently also have the capability to wind on very high
angles of lock.

Cheers
Murray
