Poor mans white gauges

Post by VIKING RACING » Tue Jun 05, 2001 7:01 pm

I am not sure if this is something new. But I have always wanted white Dial
Gauges for the "lady" and I have search the market, and the best price I could
find was $150
here in New Zealand (I nearly get 1 tire for that kind of money). Yesterday I
studied how install new Gauges at
http://www2s.biglobe.ne.jp/~AWD/teoutline.html and realized that I could
remove the background on the gauges. So I out in the garage got the things
out, scanned the gauges "invert"(black goes white..) and there it was,
printed it out on high resolution paper, took it to work and laminated them to
get strength, and installed it today. to a cost of zip zero , I now have white
gauges.
You can have a look at them at the AGM, I will make a MKII version with
Photopaper
when I remember to buy it, should get me a little better Quality.
I am not sure how many copyright laws I have broken. But if anyone would like
to do the same thing I can E-mail you my scanned images in .jpeg format

Poor mans white gauges

I'm happy with my 'black' ones at present, but I've seen some for sale that
didn't look much more than white paper for 80+$.

However, you don't get to have any light etc behind them unless the paper is
thin enough, and then they still look a bit washed out - also laminating
will give a bit of glare, unless there is such a thing as a matt laminating
pouch - you could try a matt artists spray or something maybe. - As a cheap
DIY though, you can't go wrong!

Hint: If you convert to JPG, you will get some colour/pattern bleed. Try
using compressed TIFF if you can - it is a lossless compression. (or even
Zip up a .BMP)

cheers
H.

Poor mans white gauges

Post by VIKING RACING » Wed Jun 06, 2001 7:49 pm

Hi there
Progress report on the development of white gauge faces, I am already up to
MkIII now(wife think I have gone nut) have now changed colors on the
lettering and added some extra graphics. No problem with the light, just a
different appearance as it now light up the whole gauge face. zorruno you are
right about that the laminate gives some glare, so that need to be sorted
out, will try to find some matt laminate, I have seen it but can4t remember
where.
I also converted the scanned image to .tiff and it was much easier to work
with.

Now to something else, if someone is after good set of wheels with good
tires please have a look at my ad in the forsale section, I really need to
get them sold so I get some money for new tires to the16" wheels I bought.
