Replacement tops & glass windows

Hi there,

The last job on my rebuilt car, when it is finally done, will be a new roof.
I was asking questions at an upholsterer today, and wondered if anyone on
the list has had a vinyl roof with glass window fitted. If so are there any
problems I should be aware of?

I love my glass rear window.

Only issue that I know of is it wont sit flat if you're planning on
getting a roll-bar.

The window is slightly shorter than the plastic window, but only at
the bottom, and you dont really need to see the boot-lid in the rear
view mirror, do you?

Fletch,

Any problems with the soft-top boot fitting over the top with the glass
window?. I think I read somewhere that the stack was higher and the boot
wouldn't fit.

I believe that may be a problem with some (but not all) models of the
Robbins brand tops.

Mine is an EZ-On top, and has no such problems. Factory boot fits
fine...

I've heard cling wrap does an OK job , and CHEAP...

Hi Gary

Tomorrow (Monday), my baby goes to get a new window. I did cost out a glass
one, but at $600 +GST it did not appeal too much. Ok, it's glass and there
are a couple of perks with demisters and stuff, the actual window space
itself is smaller and if it ever gets broken and has to be replaced they
remove the entire back panel instead of just stitching in a plastic one, it
also has to be smaller for when you put the roof down, you can't fold glass.
If I was rich and famous it would be great, but there are too many vandals
around here to know it's gonna last. Demisters and the extras are that ..
extra. Costs more to get that stuff hooked up. I've decided to run with a
very good quality plastic instead. Good luck with your decision. If you do
go with the glass, I'd like to hear your opinion on it

Thanks for the comment Tina, I'm leaning towards the glass option because
its only $100 more than the plastic option when replacing the entire top,
which I have to do. My main concern was the folded stack height increasing
so the boot won't fit over it.

Hi, Gary.
Sorry I haven't responded sooner.
I have a glass window and have some concerns with it, also some advantages.
Good...
clear vision-less care on cold days-doesn't mark or scratch
not so good...
heavier, meaning roof raising is not so easy- my zip is too short-roll bar
mounting restricted

as for the folded height, I use my top boot all the time.
Easy to look at if you would like.

I may have missed a rounds on this one so at the risk of being redundant:
If I have a 91 (which I do) and replace the whole top with one with a
glass back window, will the extra height when the soft top is down caused
by the glass prevent me from using my hardtop?
