Watch Out!

Post by mx-5 » Thu May 03, 2001 11:06 am

Just a wee word of warning for Christchurch owners ... my baby got broken into
last night through the passenger side small window. All the took were the
center console moulded ashtray and my team voodoo gear knob. They also had a
look under the bonnet, in my glove compartment and pulled off the sensor to the
CD stacker and made a general mess - they did not touch any of the electricals
- obviously stealing to order. If anyone should come in contact with these two
items, they are obviously not legit.

Also, as you can probably tell, I'm looking for a center console moulded
ashtray. Does anyone have anything avail?

Onwards and upwards ... going to install an alarm that will blow the little
buggars eardrums off.

Cheers
Tina

Sad to hear of this but mine has suffered the same way...also in
Christchurch, and similar damage! I refuse to leave my mx5 anywhere in
public areas unless with the hardtop on.

Unfortunately I live in an apartment building and the carparking is communal.
Been parking there since August last year with no probs until now. I'm more
worried they are going to come back.

Thanx

Surely "shot" is a little excessive ?
Maybe jailed for life.

tina - the secret of a good alarm system is not volume... it is innovation.

Aww darn! oh well .. I'll just go for a little electric wiring of the door
handles. For real .. I know of someone who did that once. Caught the offender
too.

Seriously thou ... what should a good stealthy alarm do? I have someone
looking into it for me, but I'm not too sure what's good and what's not.

Tina-
I'm sure you'll get a few replies to this - here's my 10 cents worth.
A good alarm should include an engine immobiliser, have a battery back-up, and should be wired for your bonnet and boot
switches. An Infra-red detector is handy for the cockpit, so you can leave the roof down and the alarm on... Several
models have a warning beep as you get close to the vehicle. A movement sensor is a good attachment, as it will set the
alarm off if your car is either jacked up ( to prevent wheel theft ) or towed...

The best system on the market is the Chubb Tracknet installation : A GPS module alerts the Chubb control centre if your
car is stolen, and it can be remotely immobilised, and the police notified of it's location.

Tina,

Colin Partington, who is usually on the list, is the rep for the lower North
Island & South Island for a good alarm brand. I think he can arrange a
discount for club members. I'm going to have one of those installed in my
car when it is finally back togther.

I will take the liberty of passing on your phone number so he can give you a
no obligation call.

Id have to agree with Peter regarding the Chub Traknet
system, it is definatly the best you can buy, i looked
at for my own car but its about $1500-$1800 plus the annual monitoring fee.
The sad truth is that if they realy what it, they'll
do whatever it takes (usually they will just tow it away) to get it.
On my car i have an alarm simply for the convenience
of remote central locking, but the best thing is a
kill switch.
A kill switch is a hidden switch that is completly
seperate from the alarm, once 'on' the car just wont
go, the best way to do this is to simply interupt the
trigger from the computer to the fuel pump relay(above
brake pedal) or the computer power, so it aint goin
nowhere!
The only problem is that youy have to remember to set
it each time you leave the car.
And dont park it in dodgy areas!
