Sony MP3 Head unit

Post by zorruno » Tue Mar 27, 2001 8:59 am

for those who were interested in seeing Sony MP3 player, here is some
details of it.
http://formen.ign.com/news/32473.html

Why are all stereo manufacturers of late trying to make their stereo head
units look like something out of a cockpit of a 747 ?

Hey, I just bought Morven a Sony head unit for her car and I resemble that
remark...

Actually, they do look awful except the one I bought (of course). It's the
bottom of the range CDX3600 which is silver (of course) and has no 3D
display or useless gimmicks (apart from bass boost). IMHO it's quite classy.

It's on the Sony web site http://www.sony.co.nz/sonymobile/ on page 2 of the
CD head units if anyone is interested.
It's $499 in the Sony show room, $390 at Repco or $340 at Driving Sound on
Kyber Pass Rd, Auckland if you haggle.

Sony do one. Its about twice the price of an equivalent in car CD player of the
same quality. Soundline (I think - anyway that place in Newmarket in Auckland)
stock it. Sony Store also, but they then outsource the fitting.

many manufacturers do one, most retailers can get them, but I have only seen
a couple on display. I only know of one being used in competition in NZ,
but there are probably more.

In the cases I've seen they are much more expensive. There is much less of
a market market now that CDR and more recently MP3 has taken over. What I
do like (I have seen Sonys) is their six disc Minidisc stacker. That thing
was TINY! If you can get a sony CD head and MD stacker, you've got the best
of both worlds.

I use portable MD in the 'other' car with tape deck sometimes, but I also
have a Panasonic 40 second shock CD portable, and that is usually more
convenient because I don't have to copy my CDs to MD first.

Also CDRs are cheaper than MDs, so you can copy your CDs and leave the
copies in the car. MDs are still $3-$5 so could be a theft target. MDs
are smaller and more damage resistant, but you can fit lots of CDs in a CD
wallet (without covers obviously).

Portable MD is much better for running/exercising etc though, as it is
smaller and will not jump at all - even with continual shock

If it were me... I would
1. buy a CD head unit
2. spend what you have left on a CDR unit for your PC

Just a piece of useless information,
if anyone sees the ad for the sony mini disc player that plugs into your cassette
player, Sony used my yellow MX5 last year for the advert, i've not seen it but a
few people have seen it and recognised the fact it was a MX5 interior.

Ray :-)

want to film the interior??!! Sheesh ;)

Thanks for your info zorruno. I have been using MD's for about 5 years ,
recording music onto md's for that whole period from work , (I work at a
radio station). I paid $AU300 for the mini disc in hong kong , and $AU30
for 20 disc's !!! . There's music on there you either can't get anymore or
would search very hard for , and in terms of dollars could not replace. I
want to hear it when I'm in the car. I'm sure the right song at the right
time helps you drive better , just a theory.

. Does the md you use in the car run of a normal cd in car power source
??? Does it sound OK ???

By the way , a cd writer plus the cost of the PC ( i dont have) could blow
my budget .

cheers
Matt

Ha!ha!ha! yeah i know!, but i was well paid for it, they did have a BMW Z3 there for
somthing else, when i turned up everyone crowded round YP and was drooling all over
it, non of them had seen a yellow MX5 before, quite interesting to think its quarter
of the price of the Z3, so you can imagine the big grin on my face, even better was
the face of the owner of the Z3

I usually just run the MD off its battery. It seems to last for hours on a
charge (built in LiON battery) and has an adaptor for two AAs that you clip
on (yours prob does also). I keep some charged up Nicads for this just in
case. The MD lasts much longer on a one charge than the portable CD player
as the MD motor is only running intermittantly.

You can get universal adaptors for 12V that will suit from Jaycar, or Dicky
Smith. I got one ages ago from DS.
??? Does it sound OK ???
does it sound OK? Yes. Brilliant? No. but - this is my company car so
only has stock door speakers (oh and some basic twin 8" subwoofers in a
ported enclosure-running directly off the head unit). And it is only as
good as the tape adaptor and the dynamic range of the tape head (which is
marginal). You can also sometimes hear a bit of mechanical movement from
the tape adaptor, but then there are better ones than I've got (the sony one
is much better). There is no difference to me in sound running the CD vs MD
through the adaptor however.

You'll still get _Noticeably_ better audio from a car CD player, and it will
be loads cheaper than a car MD player. But if you want the hassle of
plugging in and unplugging a portable MD - which you've already got - it
will be a pretty cheap option for you and definately be better than standard
quality tapes. The advantage there is that if you have a stock tape player,
and remove your MD, there is less chance of radio theft.
Thanks for your info zorruno. I have been using MD's for about 5 years ,

I paid $390NZ in '98 in HK with 10 discs... I then had to buy the digital
optical cable for recording... oh and then the CD player with optical out to
record from... :)
By the way , a cd writer plus the cost of the PC ( i dont have) could blow
my budget .
now you didn't mention you didn't have a PC...

Feel free to send me up any CDs you want 'backed up' plus some blanks. Now,
let's see. I like techno, dance music, a bit of Jazz, some classical... ;)
