Soft tops ... unzip or not to unzip????

Post by ANDREAS LUNDH » Thu Feb 08, 2001 9:48 pm

Hello there all,

Can someone please tell me when folding the soft top
down, is it necessary/vital to unzip the plastic
window first.

What have you all found in your experiences with this?
Your advice(s) would be appreciated.

Sincerely

Andrew

Soft tops ... unzip or not to unzip????

Hi, I have two thoughts.
Firstly you can fold the roof without unzipping the window. You must use a
foam roll on the outside of the window as you lower the roof.
Results of not doing this include creasing and folding.
Secondly and I believe the preferred method is to always unzip and to lay
the window flat with a protective cover both sides.
The cover both sides prevents the rub and scratch marks appearing as the
folded roof vibrates and moves while driving.
I have used two towels with good success. There are some good felt lined
ones available commercially.

It is I think a good idea to release the front roof clamps prior to zipping
or unzipping as this relieves strain on the zip.
I have used 'Mothers' plastic polish massaged into the clear window and then
buffed off. Works well.

I know of a car parked in a frost that split the window as it was lowered
due to the cold. I surmise that they may get a little brittle at low temps.
Hope that helps.

Soft tops ... unzip or not to unzip????

I know this is contrary to every piece of MX5 advice known to man (or woman)
but I don't bother unzipping the window. I've never had a decent roof and I
know I'll need to replace it some time, so I don't really care about the
back window.

However if the temperature is low enough though the window WILL break. This
happened to me in winter a couple of years ago, late at night when the
temperature was probably about 5C.

Luckily I won a new back window from Al's upholstery, so I didn't have to
buy a whole new roof.

If anyone in Auckland has a back window that is about 1.5 years old and that
has been concienciously unzipped and layed flat every time, we could perhaps
do a comparison against my back window which is now 2 years old but hasn't
been unzipped in the last year and a half. The results could be be
interesting.

Cheers

Chic

Like Chick, I don't unzip my roof (cause the zip is buggered), but I use the
"two towel method" of window protection. Unfortunately, with the amount of
time the roof is down the window not only has a large crease mark, but now
sports a 3" split vertically thru the crease. The car lives in a garage
when not in use, so the elements can be ruled out.
