No radio - I was wrong about impedance...

Post by zorruno » Thu Feb 01, 2001 12:39 pm

looked at my haynes manual, and found that the factory head rest speakers
are wired in parallel, so I am wrong. So are the factory headrest speakers
8ohm? or is the radio designed for a two ohm load? anyone?

No radio - I was wrong about impedance...

zorruno, thanks for your response. My car is set up with factory run cable from
the head unit, terminating at a plug under each seat. There are 4 wires for each
seat, 2 blue color, 2 red. My method was to chop the plug off, strip the ends of
each wire and attach that to 2 runs of normal speaker cable which I stuffed down
the back of each seat (there was no cable in the seat already) and attach that
to 2 speakers in each seat. ( I figured 4 cables terminating at the factory plug
meant it was set up for 2 speakers at each seat) I had everything set up loosely
- cable wasn't stuffed down seat back, just run over the seat to "test" the
system ( as it was I had reversed the polarity of the spkrs, so remedied that).
No problem. They are 5 watt 4ohm spkrs ( I had figured the standard factory ones
wouldn't have been of much higher wattage and that it was more as a 'surround'
set up than actual 'main' spkrs in the headrest - I also didn't want to go
completely deaf!! )

It was as I was undoing the wires from the spkrs to do the permanent
installation that the stereo died - nobody home at all. The clock on the stereo
dead too. I was going to cover the cable joins properly with heatshrink tube
once I had run them thru the seat. I had just twisted the ends of the bare wire
together to form each join as a temporary measure, while I made sure it worked.

Is it highly possible that the bare ends touched and shorted the unit out,
blowing the internal fuse in the stereo? I had removed the stereo completely
(after it died - so it was disconnected from the power ) and no joy when
reconnected, so I think its not the security code feature, as there is no power
to the unit at all - it does not turn on. I'll wait til the weekend then take it
out again and see if I can get to the fuse part (apparently its soldered in??)
- That link in your email was extremely helpful, thanks.

Graeme
