Replacement of Timing Belt

My '92 has just clocked over 100,000km.
I now want to change the timing belt as generally advised.
Can anyone recommend a reliable mechanic shop to do the work - vicinity
of Newmarket, Auckland.

Sorry, cannot advise a mechanic, but...

...it is not a huge task if you wanted to replace it yourself - say a couple
of beers, two friends giving moral support (4 more beers) and some advice
from a clubmember who was done it before? I haven't done it yet, but will
in another 50Kkms...

I got a full service on my '90 at Greenlane Mazda (now John Andrew) in July
including the cam belt which cost a total of $540.30 including GST.

This is probably a bit on the expensive side, and I cannot comment on the
quality of work apart from the fact that it is running well, but might be
useful to compare this price with other outfits.

Cambelt replacement is reasonably easy if you follow the enthusiasts
handbook. If you've never dismantled part of your engine before it would be
a bit daunting though.

Assuming you don't want to do it yourself I would go to a Mazda dealership.
They will know exactly the procedure required and you'll be likely to get
you car back with the same performance it had before the cambelt was
replaced.

If it is a 1991 or newer its worth asking them to also do the front
crankshaft seal, and also on any year car the water pump. Easy to do those
two when they're in there, they don't cost too much, and they're both likely
to fail before the next cambelt is due anyway.

Thanks for this.

I have an MX5 in Australia (modified red '92 150,000km) and have done all of
this (belt, water pump, seal) and still running strong.

I am not set up with equipment to do it myself in Auckland so I need to pay
someone to make sure my standard silver '92 with 100,000km keeps ticking over
with confidence.
John Andrew Motors seems to get a few votes.

Additionally, I don't have the handbook - I have made enquiries and have placed
an order locally but have to wait for delivery...(Flying Pig is more
expensive than the local motor book shop by $30, and Amazon books reckon it is
out of print - who to believe?)
