I'm buying new tyres tomorrow (185/60-14"). Different dealers tell me
different things about which ones are good (no surprise there). Price
seems to be the remaining method of choosing:
$200 - Bridgestone Potenza RE711 (were $225 at another place)
$185 - Dunlop FM901 (usually $193?). NZ made?
$164 - Bridgestone Grid II
$149 - Yokohama A539 (new model - on special), assymetric
I'm told that the RE711 wears well, so maybe it is good value for money?
Only the people who sell the Yokohamas seem to have good things to say
about them. Dealers seem to dislike NZ made tyres (supposedly inferior
quality).
Anyone got any helpful comments?
Karl.

185/60-14" tyres?
Karl,
The Bridgestone G-Grids seem to have some positive things said about them
(if thats what the "Grid II is). When I got my car it had G-Grids on it, and
they worked well. Price looks OK too. Its pretty hard to wear out tyres on
an MX-5 with any sort of normal driving, so wear shouldn't be an issue.

185/60-14" tyres?
love my 711s! (actually 710s but not a huge change in design).
A great all round tyre & very forgiving. The difference between grids and
711s is noticeable (to me anyway), and I think worth more than the $40 per
tyre. I paid close to $300 for my last 2 710s. but in 16". I had 710s on
my MX6 also.
Grids are also good - they seem to wear about the same as 710s but a lot
less grippy (esp in wet). They are still what I'd class a performance tyre
however, and obviously price is better. Pete has Grid IIs I think - Peter?
can we not get T1-Ss in that size yet? A lot of MX5 owners seem to be
swinging that way.
