If you wish you can say that Colin Partington from Resonic NZ suggested you
call.
Good luck and let me know how you fare..

Deanna, I am not surprised at your story re the State. Some years ago my
wife and I drove a Daimler v8, insured with State- I then bought an Daimler
XJ6/ sovereign- I then went to insure the XJ6 ( we still had the v8) with
State and I initially got a quote- then got my wife to do the same thing and
lo and behold cheaper premium and less excess- all for the same details!
Both of us having 'clean' driving records. I got insurance on the XJ6 by
letting my wife do all the transactions.
Suggest you try AMI for insurance...
perhaps you should consider buying a hardtop for your car in the 'light' of
your insecure parking arrangements-may stop all your frustrations.

Deanna,

What excess does your policy document show??

Deanna,

Back in June you implied that you had had your roof slashed for the 3rd
time. So presumably this time makes 4, if you told State about the other 3
then I'm not surprised your excess is higher than the cost of a new roof. No
insurance company will keep paying out for the same type of claim. Your
friend's quote probably didn't take into account the previous vandalism.

Incidentally, I know a lot of MX5 drivers in Auckland, and I've never heard
of anyone getting their cars vandalised. You must be really unlucky or
parking in all the wrong places or something.

Try Royal Sun Alliance on 0800 505 905
You will get a better deal if you put other insurance with them (Contents
for instance).

When I rang AMI they said up front my excess would be $1200 because of the
soft top. My excess at Royal Sun is $250 and this is even after an $8500
repair claim and now a super charger fitted.

Hi Deanna

I don't know how much use this will be to you, but I have been with AMI insurance since I got my first car at 17 and have never had a problem with them. I've had my mx5 for just over 2 years now, it's soft top and I don't own a hard top, and I park in a communal car parking area where my apartment is. There is no security, but some lighting. My excess if I hit something is $250 (over 25) and my excess if it was broken into, trashed, stolen or all of the above was $750 (because it is a soft top). Since then I have just had an alarm installed that covers the appropriate requirements and my excess for it being broken into, trashed or stolen is now $0. All I had to do was ring them and fax them my proof of purchase from the installer. All very simple. My car got broken into a few months ago at home, thankfully they smashed a window to get in, instead of doing over the roof. With AMI glass cover, it cost me nothing to get the window fixed and what was stolen wasn't worth my!
!
excess at the time so I just replaced that myself (except for my sunnies). I would hazard a guess that the same people are doing over your car. I fixed that problem by getting only the window fixed and left the inside alone for a couple of months (if you can bear it). I'm sure you've had plenty of advice from lots of club members about the do's and don'ts. All I say is protect what you have. For your stereo I would get a removeable face, for your steering wheel one of those clamp thingies and if you can, cement glue down anything that you can. I would say, don't lock your glove compartment or the centre console - they will only smash them if they try it again, and don't keep anything of importance in them (like sunnies). If you can afford it, get yourself and alarm, or put one on time-payment. It might deter them.

All the best of luck Deanna - I know the awful feeling when you come across your baby looking like that. I hope you manage to stop the thugs.

Tina

PS. I've also been told by a friend who experience a similar problem on his car (not an mx5) what he did to stop regular attackings. Unfortunately, it's not legal, would be nice to deal a bit back to them. He had the car wired so that by remote he could make it "hot" as such. Caught the attacker - almost electrocuted him. The guy didn't do it again.

BTW - I got a call from one broker interested in doing a club deal and have
sent him all the details. I haven't heard back however.

I've spoken to someone I know, supposedly a broker of brokers ---he said we could probably acquire a discount if we could get a large number (90 -100+) members to sign up.

With all the Insurance discussions going on, I thought I'd get my car valued
because it's in better than average condition and I wanted to be sure I was
insuring it for the right value. I went to John Andrew Mazda in Grey Lynn,
Auckland and spoke to the used car buyer in the Ford part of their showroom
(because he does their valuations) about how much I should insure it for.

Now, my car is a 91 Silver, and for for the last few months I've been
upgrading it. It now has new paint, leather seats, top of the range stereo,
excellent alarm, 15 inch Performance mags with Toyo T1S High performance
tyres, twin hoop chrome style bar, Jackson racing tubular sway bars,
Personalised plate TOP DWN plus lot's of other goodies. It does have high
mileage (200K), but it goes like a dream and looks brand new. I get comments
about it every single day.

This idiot* at John Andrew Mazda told me I should be insuring it for $5,000
because that's how much it would cost to replace it. I know owners usually
overvalue their cars, but I know a fair bit about MX5 prices. I look at their
prices everyday on the web or in newspapers, magazines. I check them out every
time I see one in a dealers yard. The only MX5 I've ever seen for under
$6,500, is our other one which I bought for my wife. I realise that dealers
probably don't pay much for them as trade ins, but I was specifically asking
for an insurance valuation. (Incidently he didn't even look at the car before
giving his opinion). Perhaps he just didn't want to do the valuation, but he
was grumpy and unhelpful. I would advise anyone wanting to get their car
valued to go elsewhere.

* Obviously this is only my opinion, but I stand by that opinion because in
the last year I haven't seen any for sale for $5000 never mind one is as good
condition as mine

Cheers

Further to the insurance discussion. At their request I have had an AA Ins.
quote for my 1990 at $10,000 declared etc. They have quoted two rates - $300
and $600 excess (I have a $500 excess with AMI). AA are $100 and $50 dearer
respectively than AMI all else being the same.

Deanna Bell

Post by Deanna Bell » Sat Apr 28, 2007 3:43 pm

After my car got vandalized, soft top slashed and had the stereo
and steering wheel stolen, State Insurance told me that my excess
was $1500 and I decided to not make a claim as the damage was
about $2000. I then proceeded to ring state to try and negotiate a
better deal as I was unaware of my high excess. I was told that
that was the best they could do for me and in light of the recent
damage I could not get a better deal. In fact they said that even
though I didn't make a claim my premiums would still be affected
next year when they came up for renewal. I again expressed that I
had a clean record, no previous claims and no speeding tickets.
They would not review my policy. So I got my friend to ring for a
fresh quote giving the same details I have. And wouldn't you know it-
she got quoted a similar annual premium but an excess of $500
for both theft and accident??? So I called back and said that my
friend had a better deal than me and I have been with state for 4
years. They would still not review my policy. So now what? I have
a damaged car, have been paying $600+ a year and and am
getting nowhere fast. I am presently on the phone to every other
insurance company looking for a better deal. People last week
were mentioning insurance companies but I haven't saved any
details. If anyone out there can help and give me some names and
numbers it would be much appreciated.

Regards
Deanna the jinxed
