Its not that soft tops aren't covered, but rather the excess is much greater for damage to it. for example Its quite normal to have a $250 excess for all claims except the soft top which is $750. There can't be as many theiving scum in Blenheim (as there are up North) who gain acess to your car via slashing a hole in the roof.

When I came to auckland a year and a half ago My insurance basically doubled
for an MX 5 compared to what it would have been if I'd stayed in Tauranga.
I'll have to dig out the policy and read it up, not sure what the excess is
now, but I know it's costing me about $1150 per annum and that's with no
claims and age 40+, alarmed, with State. hmmmmm

I wonder what criteria State uses? I came to Auckland from the UK about
a year and a half ago, no claims and aged 37. Mine costs me about $350
per year with State... I couldn't prove my no claims either but they
gave me it anyway, also no discount for the alarm as I fitted it myself
(although I'm a qualified electrical engineer _sigh_)

I had a hardtop when I first insured my 5 but I sold it after I realised
I hadn't used it for 12 months. Last week (5 years later) I noticed
that my insurance policy says hardtop so I asked them to change it
when I was talking to them (AMI). They told me the excess would
increase... So owning a hardtop reduces your excess, even if you
never ever use it!

O.k. just checked my policy. Couldn't find any mention of Excess on my
policy so rang them up at State. My excess was for Accident $500.00 and if
car was stolen then it was $300.00, but now they have changed it right now
to $300.00 for either stolen or accident.
Policy is $630.00 per year. And I use a hardtop most of the time except in
the middle of summer when I'm not anywhere near work (i.e. on holiday) when
I give the soft top a run for a couple of weeks.( Too many hooligans near
work)
Sorry for the fright Graeme.
Cheers

Wow - $1150 a year and you are 40+??? I assume from that you have no no
claims discount??

3 Golden rules to cheap insurance

1. Put all your eggs in one basket - Insurance companies give discounts if you
have all your insurance (house, contents, car) together with one company
2. Shop around... compare premiums & excesses & whether the soft top
carries a high excess
3. The more secure your car is the better - cheaper rates apply if its alarmed
or immobilised, you use a "club" type of lock & its parked overnight in a locked
garage. It costs more if its regularly parked on the street...

I'm shocked, are you sure you are entitled to be on this egroup?
