If you use the search feature on the club website you'll find quite a bit of past discussion about insurance. The soft top excess is common to most insurance companies. Prices do vary a bit but its usually due to the age of the driver and where the vehicle lives (another great reason not to live in Auckland ), but if you think you've got it bad try to insure a supercharged mx5 with a mainstream insurance company when you're under 30.

Hi,

I haven't had much luck with insurance...

I'm under 25. My excess was $1100 before I turned 21, and now I think its
about $950 or something. They told me originally they wouldn't cover any
damage to the roof at all. Costs me about $1150 in premiums a year, and
thats a commercial policy ('cause I use it for work sometimes) which is
cheaper than a normal private policy. Thats with NZI as well. No discounts,
despite that fact I have two vehicles with them, and my close family (about
7 people all up) have all got insurance with them as well (a total of about
10 cars). I do get a no claims bonus, but they wouldn't even give me that
when I had just 3rd Party, Fire and Theft (my friends with AMI did get no
claims bonuses on the same sort of policy though).

AA and AMI wouldn't insure me at all, the quote I got from State was about
the same as NZI.

Funny thing is, I've only ever had one accident. Some woman (over 25 I might
add) ran a red light and totalled my precious car. Police sent her a ticket,
and her insurance company (AMI) paid me out. I found this quite funny. AMI
don't want to insure me because I'm one of the riskiest drivers on the road
(under 21 male in a sports car), but they have to pay me $10k because one of
the 'safest drivers' on the road (female over 25) ran a red light at speed.
I couldn't even see her coming due to the position of other traffic etc.

Anyway, AMI ripped me off in the end, only paid me $10k, when it really
should have been at least twelve (car had just had a brand new roof, + 2
phase immobiliser and alarm, stereo and cd changer and had been regularly
serviced, cost me 12 to buy and I hadn't done that many k's in it). We
disagreed over the value but they ended up dragging it out so long I caved,
took what they offered and got a new MX5. It's not as nice as my old one,
but it's better than having anything else.

If anyone else knows of anyone that would insure me for a reasonable rate,
please let me know.

I also saw an old posting in one of the archives where someone said they had
some statistics they'd shown their insurance company and had consequently
got a discount, but the link to the statistics didn't work. Does anyone know
anything about that ?

Yep being old does help. I'm 34 and pay about $300 per year and have a
$250 excess for my '89. It also has $6000 worth of car audio that is
covered as well. Oh and I live in Auckland. The stereo got stolen out of
my previous car as well. They (AMP) payed out in full for the value of
new stereo gear! Named drivers helps a lot and so does a NZ approved
alarm system. We have one of the best money can buy. It came with the
car :).but are no longer sold in NZ :(

Something to remember about insurance, and I think people should check this out just incase... Its the car thats covered at the time of insurence, if you add more things to the car and don't tell the insurance company, you have the right to remove these things b4 the company takes them esp if they are on HP like car steros etc, but check it out just in case. Just because its in the car doesn't mean the insurance company has automatic rite to it !.

We have our car insured with AMI. Our 92, Eunos roadster is insured for $8000
for the sum of $197.00. This has a $250 excess. Complete cover of the roof is
included. I went in to ask about it as it wasn't specified in the policy and
you were all saying insurance companies wouldn't cover soft tops.
Must depend on where you live as our insurance agent looked startled when I
said people were saying their soft tops weren't covered. He said it was not a
problem here.

The soft top has no extra excess. Our excess is $250.00 on anything.
We have four vehicles plus the house and contents insured with AMI and have
been very happy with the way we have been treated with the very few claims we
have had. Three vehicles are covered for drivers over 25 only. They all have
the glass cover with no effect on the no claim bonus, and no excess charges.
My Isuzu Bighorn is the most expensive as it's covered as a commercial vehicle
(does about 30,000km per annum and is used off road). It cost $670.00 for
$23000.00 cover. Had the windscreen replaced at no cost to me after being hit
by a stone, so probably got the premium back for this year!
