Road noise

Post by Grant » Sun Oct 13, 2002 7:40 am

Any body done any sound deadening work? I would like to reduce the road noise
if possible. The road noise on coarse chip is quite high and drowns out the
noises I would prefer to hear from the exhaust. On smooth black top, it's very
acceptable.
Just fitted a winblocker (made locally by a local glass merchant) and the
effect is very good. Can hear the stereo at 100km/h easily. I can even talk on
my Ham radio at 100km/h with the roof off without any trouble. Of course, on
the twisty bits, the Ham radio and stereo are off so the drive (and exhaust
noises etc) can be enjoyed more!

How about a photo and some details? Ta!

Yeah I would be interested in how the winblocker was fitted and how it looks :)
Thanks .

I'll attempt to photograph it (windblocker with a D!)and the installation
brackets as soon as I get the chance. I need to slightly modify the mounting
brackets, as it slightly interferes with the fitting of the roof cover, but
you will see the idea. Unfortunately the weather turned cold and wet so the
roof had to be raised in a hurry.

Tyre design is the biggest contributor to noise, but it's a little expensive
to try different types. Michelin MXF Sports are quiet for a performance tyre,
so to, I believe, are Toyo T1S's.
Using Dynamat acoustic deadening also works, it's not cheap though. Try doing
the boot lid and rear bulkhead 1st.

Thnks for the info, Lou. The tyres on my 1992 MX5 are Kumho Power Racer II,
(not a manufacturer that springs to my mind for these types of tyre) and about
half worn. The bank balance means I will wait until replacement time and do
some research then on tyres. I am not after very high performance as the car
is used for normal road use only. I'll see if I can get some sort of sound
deadening material as you suggest. Do you know where I can get it from?
The boot certainly needs something. It sure does resonate if anything is
dropped into it!

Lou,

Where does one obtain Dynamat in NZ?

I use earplugs - good for 'turning down the volume' of wind, tyres etc. Music shops sell the proper musician's product - about $20 and it attenuates by 20-30 dB.

Jaycar sells rolls of inexpensive sound-deadening material , you can mail order thru their website. I think they have 2 stores in Auckland only.

hope that helps!

is that the importer? Most car audio shops have it, or a similar brand
product such as roadkill, b-quiet, cascade. Expensive though for what you get
IMO

There are plenty of other bitumin based acoustic dampening products around for
the construction/HVAC industry that is a lot cheaper but not sold specifically
for car audio use. Places like Jaycar are a good place to start.

In saying that though, some of the cheaper products don't stretch well, or
don't stick well, so you sometimes need to add contact cement, or a little bit
more time to install.

I've used dynamat & roadkill brand (boot & gearbox area & parts of door
panels), and Dynamat's spray product (doors) on my last car (MX6), and also
used a cheaper product for the entire floor area. None was more difficult
than the other, but the spray was bl*$#@ expensive for the coverage, and
because the cheap stuff was just sitting on floor area, did not need to be
worked much.

Me? I'd probably spend my money & time elsewhere for an MX5 - I don't think
you'll be able you to hear to sound proof to enable you to hear exhaust noise
over course chip. I think that would take some serious acoustic analysis...
;)
