Headrest speakers - getting 'em to work!

Post by tim.maggie » Mon Oct 07, 2002 8:54 pm

A while ago there was a flurry of e's about headrest speakers. Had some time
today so attacked mine in a 92 brg. Wot a difference! They actually work now!
Some of the emails coming thru were a bit on the confusing side so heres my -
hopefully reasonably clear - contribution for those who haven't fixed their
speakers yet - its no big deal!

1/ remove the seats (I did this but you may not need to - the bolts are bloody
tight) - dont forget to unplug the speaker wires under them before ripping
them out.

2/ 4 wires come out of the carpet to the connector - blue/wht, blue/red,
red/blk, red/orange. I DIDNT touch this side.

3/Open the zips and remove the headrest speckers from their mounting boxes -
dont disconnect them though.

4/ Looking under the seat again - I cut the 4 wires from the speakers to the
underseat connector - only about 30mm from it, stripped them back a bit, then
connected the underseat plug into one of those screw connector thingys - you
get them in a strip of about 10 and chop them down with a stanley knife
(terminal strips?)

5/ Ignore the colours of the wires between the underseat connector plug and
the terminal strip you have fitted - you just need to follow the wire from out
of the carpet - noting its colour - thru the plug to the screw terminal
strip.

6/ Standing behind the seat looking forward - the wire onto the right hand
terminal of the right hand speaker ( blue/white wire on mine) needs to connect
to the blue /white wire from the floor (connected to blue/blk before).

7/ The wire onto the left hand terminal of the RH speaker (blue blk on mine)
needs to connect to the blue/red wire from the floor.

8/ The wire onto the RH term. of the LH speaker (blue/yellow on mine) needs to
connect to red/orange from the floor.

9/ The wire onto the LH terminal of the LH speaker (blue/red on mine) needs to
connect to Red/orange from the floor.

10/ Its the same for the other seat - wack it all back together - hopefully it
will work as well as mine has!

Headrest speakers - getting 'em to work!

Well worth the effort, wasn't it?

The connector strips are known by us here as chocolate block connectors. You
can use a very small screwdriver to release the pins in the original plastic
connector and then reinsert them in the correct position to fix the phasing of
the speakers. Might have to bend the small locking tab back out to lock them
in place.
Will be interesting to see how long this post takes to appear. My second one
re the window mod was sent by me at 19:52 on the 6th. Finally shows up here at
23:08 on the 7th. Wonder where it's been!
