Swimming Pools

Post by Micheal Johnson » Thu Oct 03, 2002 8:59 pm

Hey all,
I've got this strange slushing of water sound from behind my
drivers side seat, It has only recently begun to happen, I have a new roof, So
I'm guessing that the run off from the roof may be blocked, but how do I
access this, or may it be a different problem?

Me too but I have a funny feeling that it's the passenger door sill
that's got water in it. I'll find out tomorrow.

New roof??? Did they fit a new, or repaired rain/drip rail when they did it?
If they didn't then you probably have water running down the back of the
window and into the chassis. Someone else on the list had exactly this
recently.

This is almost certainly the standard issue blocking of the door sill
drains. Believe it or not, the roof is MEANT to drain into the
chassis. The drains are pathetic and if yours haven't blocked yet
then you obviously garage your car and never let it get dirty or take
it out on wet days ;^)

Feel along the bottom of the door sill. There is a longitudinal
welded seam sticking down. Towards the the front of the door and
again towards the back are two slight bulges in the seam. The
drain holes run down through these bulges. (Bloody stupid eh?)

First enhance the drains using any handy tool. Your Swiss Army
penknife's thing for removing boy scouts from girl guides may do
the job. Ram it in and waggle it about roughly. (Works on boy
scouts.) Thereafter, always carry an unbent paperclip in the centre
console, to be used for unblocking the holes again in future.

NB you probably want to do this outdoors!

The runoff from the roof is collected in a plastic tray at the front edge
of the hood at the parcel shelf. Get under the car and you will see the
drain tubes for this coming through the floor area parallal with the
wheel. The bottom of them is often blocked and can be cleared by sticking a
wire up. Fill the trays with water to aid this. Ross.

Whilst I am sure that Ross knows what he is talking about, so do I -
this is from firsthand experience - can anyone explain?

Actually, there are drains all over the place...

There are the plastic drains for the soft-top that Chic and Ross have
mentioned...

There are drains in the sills below the doors that Mark mentioned.

There are drains in the doors themselves (for water that runs down the
windows...

They can all get blocked and cause a sloshing sound...

Theres also a drain from the windscreen cowl area that feeds water down the
inside of the mud-gard, past the side indicator repeaters... this one fills
up with leaves and sludge, but it wont cause a sloshing sound.

The ones under the sills are the widened bits of the lower edge, where the
paint stops, about 4 to 6 inches in from each end (ie wheel well)... they
are also the feature that marks the position of the jacking point, and often
if not blocked from rust or debris, are effectively blocked from being
squashed during jacking...

If you get under the car (or feel with your fingers) you'll note that most of
the lower edge is folded, like a "U" but the two drain points have a slot in
them... ram a small screwdriver in there...

Happy drain clearing...

Both statements are accurate. If the drain pipes Ross mentioned become blocked
and water builds up it can find its way into the sills under the doors and if
the drain holes in the sills are blocked you will get the sloshing sound. You
don't need to drill holes in the sills - the drain holes are on the weld seems
by each jack point. I find the small snap off blades do the trick if you push
them up into the opening - don't break them off though!!
