kiaora all from the winterless north (who am I kidding? :-p) Sorry to take
you down a grim emotional path but... has anyone ever rolled their
roadster? I have no rollbar protection and Im wondering how strong the wind
shield framing would be in such an event.

Hi,

One has just rolled north of Wanganui with the soft top up at the time it
looks like it hit a farm fence post and rolled bent the front drivers piller
around 20 deg, smashed the front window and damaged the roof but the
passenger walked away unhurt from what I have heard. Very little damage to
the car really. The insurance company did right it off as they were not sure
they could repair the front piller and still retain the original strength.

Cheers
John

Vicky,
many of us witnessed the aftermath of a roll-over a while back on the Corromandel Cruise when a certain s/c yellow model flipped on its' roof...the pillars were totally crushed flat! The driver walked away relatively un-scathed, though...He had a set of style bars!! and I believe these may have haved that mans' preverbial ass.
It certainly made those amongst us with bars of all descriptions glad to have them, those without asking where to get them and everyone pleased that little yellow rocket had them...!

How fast ???

We have heard so much about these style bars and the pro's and con's. Could the fibreglass piece behind them have helped hold them semi upright ? It looks like they are on the way down.

Anyone rolled with bars , without this harder back cover??

cheers

The car that rolled north of Wanganui a few weeks back never had any rear
bars and that car came of better than Ray's. Does that raise the question
that without bars more weight is on the boot of the car and less on the
front pillers, therefore better off. Just a thought.

John.

I bought the wreck and the engine will be going into Dave Buurgraafs race
car and the rest of the car dismantled. The style bar did a good job with
the lh hoop being bent back about 50mm but the rollover was onto soft
ground which helped.Ross, MX5mart

Trust me to ruin a nice pleasant drive on a club run, probably two things saved my
life, first being the Racing Beat style bar and most of all, being short, if i was
as tall as you Gary or Fletch it may have been a different story, i couldn't get
out from under the car till the guy following me opened the door, suffering only
a dislocated shoulder,
thanks to all the members who helped me and to Andy who waited at the hospital to
drive me home, the insurance co paid me out the same week (AMI) probably didn't help
you Matt when you tried to insure your supercharged car a week later, sorry about
that,
they are not very happy about my red MX5 being supercharged, they even asked me if
my Honda Integra (my daily car) was modified, but i cant complain they were most
helpful, letting me remove my $2000 stereo setup, probably because someone had the
insight to remove the detachable face for me, i still consider myself to be very
lucky i guess my number's not up yet.
Ray :-)

I can strongly recommend AMI for being very straight and prompt about
payments. I once had to ask them to delay payment in case my stolen
CDs turned up.

I know Ray , Gary, and Fletch, (I know him better than anyone else in the
world :-)

I'm 6'3" (190cm). I dont know the exact hight or Ray or Gary, but I'd
guess Gary was about the same height as myself, and I'd say that the terms,
"diminutive" and "compact" apply to Ray... (sorry mate!)

I think Ray has hit the nail on the head... Being a small guy, was
definitely on his side that day...

I have a "style bar", also made by Racing Beat, like Rays (but it's a
different design).

I was quite releived to see how well Ray's bar held up to the crash, as I'd
always felt mine, despite not having any rear-ward bracing (like Rays's),
was mounted quite solidly to the car. Especially considering how badly the
windscreen surround folded flat on Ray's car. Some of the Japanese "style
bars" are not nearly so solidly mounted, (they rattle when you shake them).

But, really, unless you have a motor-sport approved roll-bar (or even
better, roll-cage), you are kidding yourself if you think you've got any
roll protection... Each crash is different enough, that the variables are
what makes the difference...

ie. each crash is different, and you cant make blanket statements like
product XYZ will always save your life, but product ABC never will...

You have to decide for yourself how much protection you are happy to
live/drive with...

Remember, Roger Freeth (Possum Bourne's co-driver) died inside a
FIA/CAMS/MANZ approved roll-cage in an accident that left the car with very
mild panel-damage... the car was easily re-built, but that didnt stop the
tree-branch from coming through the "window" of the roll-cage and impaling
him...

My point is, that life's a gamble... you can take measures to reduce your
risk, but ultimately, its out of your control.

Take the measures you see fit, drive carefully, and cross your fingers...

The MX-5 is quite a safe car, as it comes from the factory... If you
perceve greater risk than usual, take the measures that you see fit, to make
yourself comfortable... and dont take any shit from people who perceive
the risks to be considerable higher or lower than you, and criticize your
saftey choices... For some this will mean never getting in a MX-5 no
matter what extra devices are fitted, and for others, this will mean,
nothing more than what the factory supplied... respect all view-points,
please...

Peace ( and peace of mind, while driving),

Fletch.

Sure is Ray, Fletch must have chosen the wrong Ray in his address book. The
Ray Fletch was referring to lives in rainy Auckland New Zealand, rather than
Sunny California which is where I think you are located...
