Some things do improve with age, and one of those things is insurance rates. I am in my late twenties and up until a year ago I had to get my insurance through a broker (try insuring a Honda CRX for a 21 year old through a normal Insurance company!!). With my bad history (a few crashes in "high risk" cars) five years behind me I was at last able to move away from the broker last year , and get a cheaper deal from a mainstream company (AMI). Six months after changing companies I sold my NA mx5 and replaced it with a supercharged one. At the time of purchase I checked with AMI and they said insurance was not a problem. As the new car had about $15K of mazdaspeed goodies (including blower) I wanted it insured for more than an unmodified car of similar age. This turned out to be a problem a few weeks later as it was more than their "value guidelines" for a mx5 so I had to get a valuation done (which agreed with my valuation). After a month of mucking me around I received a lett!
er informing me that they no longer wanted my business and as per a clause in the contract, they could withdraw cover at any time they liked, without giving any reason. So then I had to go grovelling back to the brokers who now happily charge me about twice what I was paying for my old NA car.

So the moral of the story is.. Unless you are 40+ with a long, clean history, insurance cover for a modified car will be a painfull experience.

I had the same problem with a V8 Capri about 15yrs ago (youth), so I
decided to insure myself.
I took the premium, and stuck it month by month into a Westpac
investment account, the account was one of hose on demand types, the
result was I was insured to a point, and I was earning the interest.
Not perhaps the most orthodox method but better than none.

gotta hate that. Being in my early 20's I've got years of discrimination
ahead of me, although no crashes an nuthin on my driving record, but you'd
be surprised how little that counts for.

Being in my late thirties I can still complain, moving over from the UK I
now have no 'no claims bonus' although I haven't made a claim for 8
years...

Oh well, it's still worth it :)

I know its not an MX-5, but we only pay $38 a month for full cover for our
20B TT Cosmo. We are 26 (me) and my fiance 25. Thats for full cover. We also
rang the insurance company (NZI) in October and told them we had just
supercharged our RX-7, no worries they say even though we reminded them it
is now more powerful. Cost a few $$ more than the Cosmo.
I think driver record has more to do with it than age. We both have squeeky
clean driving records and also have 4 cars insured with them and our
contents insurance (and have done for the last 5-6 years), this helps also
with price.

You should be able to bring your UK no-claims over to NZ. I took my 5 years
NZ no-claims with me to the UK with no problem (Endsleigh) and the insurance
companies here are much bigger thieves than the NZ ones.

Actually Darryl, the reason you can afford to insure those cars is
because of your location.

In Morrinsville, there are neither as many car thieves, or other cars
to crash into, and this is what makes your rates so cheap.

A friend of mine in Hamilton can insure his MX-5, batmobile RX-7 and
Telstar TX-5 for about the same price that I can insure my MX-5 in
Auckland for...

And I'm sure you'll agree, Morrinsville is probably even lower risk
than Hamilton.

And, for the same reasons, it costs more to insure a vehicle in West
and South Auckland than it does in Central/Eastern suburbs or North
Shore.

Fletch.

Fletch, this is also correct, maybe you should have a PO Box in
Morrinsville?

Better than driving records is having all your house / contents and lots of
cars insured with the burglars - They love that - Also being married & a
respectable sounding Job tittle helps

I think the chap who was putting the premiums away was onto a winner. When
I think of how much I've payed over 30 yrs of driving and never had an
accident. - Could have bought quite a few toys.

This is all well and good until you accidentally swerve to avoid a cat, side
swipe a parked ferrari, travel into the opposite lane, narrowly missing a Mk
II Jaguar (who swerves to avoid you and hits a 1907 Rolls-Royce Silver
Ghost) and end up smashing into an antique Rolex stand at a local jewellery
shop.

How much public liability insurance did you manage to save? My policy with
AMI covers the first $20 Million. At least take out 3rd party...

Hmmm, yes I think my problem was basically I was driving on my ex-wifes
insurance policy, therefore I wasn't entitled to no-claims bonus myself.

My really big complaint is having to sit the driving test again! I have
about a months worth of driving left before I have to do the written test
(Oh dear, what was that rule about turning right again?)
