Soft top supports

Hi guys

I've been listening in on this list for a while, and was hoping I could get
some advice.

While I was driving up the Kaikora coast in my black jellie-bean I struck an
interesting problem..
The canvas of my soft top has broken free from one of the cross bars, it seems
it was only attached by glue to another strip of canvas, it is this glue which
has broken.
The car is now a lot nosier to drive as the soft top pulsates up and down
changing the pressure in the cabin, not very nice.. I guess this was my
punishment for having the roof up in the first place!

Can anybody share any wisdom on this? Has anyone had it happen before?

I guess the best thing to do is get a vehicle upholsterer to glue it together
again, can anybody recommended somebody suitable in Christchurch?

thanks for your help
George

Hi George,
I had the same problem, went into Mitre 10, and Selleys make a Vinyl to
Vinyl contact adhesive ($5-6.00) its in a tube like toothpaste,.
I applied a very thin strip then sat a lump of wood on the top hoop and
10 min later it's fixed.
I thought, oh yea for how long??
That was about 6 months ago and it's still ok.
I did call an upholsterer he told me they were "hot welded" and there
wasn't much you could do?? Wrong.
Hope this helps,
Biff

I had the same problem and obtained a can of glue the staff at the
Hardwarehouse chain recommended. Worked like a charm! The name? zorruno can
tell you --- he had the same problem and has my can of glue :).

It's the difference between a professional job and an amateur. I
don't mind re-glueing it every year or so, it only takes a few
minutes.

Thanks guys

heaps of good advice, so this is fairly common it seems.. I think I will give
the Selleys Glue a go when I get back to Chrsitchurch, I'm in sunny Blenheim
for a week or two, (haven't seen a single MX-5 since I left Chch, must be
somthing in the water up here)

cheers
George
