Wheel Alignment

Post by Glen McLean » Wed May 01, 2002 6:54 pm

righto, you are running 17" wheels on the car correct?

absorbsion becomes a problem. i am a wheel alighment expert among other
things.

i have performed about forty alignments on my car as to see the best result.

i have run all sorts of tyre and wheel combos.

i am at present back to the factory size! this sounds like b.s. but with the
dunlop fm901 at 185/60x14 and at 28 p.s.i. hot, they work fine indeed.

i have tried slicks, b/s so2 , toyo tryes and semperate tryes. these are all
s.hit compared to the dunlops.

and now the specs;

caster : +3.50 deg ( or as much as you can get!!!)

front camber: -1.00 mins. (that is with 60 mins to a deg, not 100)

rear camber : -0.50 (run just a little less - camber on rear)

rear toe : +1.0mm (this is total toe, not each side)

front toe : +1.00mm (with your body weight in the drivers seat)

you cannot afford to go over the top with the neg camber. you have a
tighter foot print on the road with the large tyres. dont over inflate the
tyres either. run about 26 psi in them. keep a close eye on trye pressures
as this is the single biggest factor in keeping the car feeling right. note
that there is a lot less air in such a large trye, and that even if a small
amount escapes out, it will make a huge impact on the way the car feels.
also on the wallet if worse thing happen.

you will recieve a lot of mail on this subject. ignore them, my spelling and
grammer may be a little on the s.hite side , but i know what i am talking
about. dont feel offended you other boffins, just get on with your
flatlander lives.

i love my mx5 , and the blondes who drive them.

yippie two days til the weekend and a thrash in the jungle.

i have also corner weighted my 5, it's a bit of a gay thing to do. it all
makes a difference when you are hard on the heals of a wrx through tight
turny stuff!!!

any day mate!

I'm sure Glenn is happy with his car's set-up, and obviously his
expertise on the subject.

I dont claim to be such an expert, but I do know that most every other
suggestion I've seen puts the rear negative camber about half a degree
more than the front, not less.

Maybe every-one else is wrong?

I do agree that with wider tires, you want less negative camber than
with narrower tires...

Wheel alignment

Hi Guys,
I don't profess to be an expert on wheel alignment, although I've done quite
a few. Pete at Marshal Tyres is however and I trust his settings. My car is
not tail happy unless I want it to be, it actually is very neutral even at
"holy sh1t" speeds.
There is heaps to know about alignment, All adjustments are related eg,
camber affects caster affects toe etc, etc. All adjustments have to be
related to the others, not done in isolation. A good alignment guy will set
it up to your driving style, tyres, etc.
N.B You may not get more than 1 degree negative camber unles the car is
lower than stock.
Lou
