Wheel Alignment specs

Post by Mathew » Wed May 01, 2002 4:56 pm

I've got my five booked in for an alignment this weekend and I was wondering if anyone out there has any tips on what settings work best. I was origionally going to leave it up to the workshop to set it up as they think best, but it may help if I have some ideas to start with. The car is a 91 with Mazdaspeed shocks and springs but standard swaybars. The tires are 205-40-17 Toyo T1-S. I used to run 1.5 degrees (I think?) of camber in the rear of my old car, but as the new one has a supercharger I think this will cause traction problems. I have no idea on what the front should be set up like.

Matthew,

You'll probably get a few answers, but this is what I have...

-1 degree at rears
-0.5 degree at front

a little toe in at rear (can't remember exactly, but factory spec will do) -
stops it from getting out of hand if the back breaks away.

zero toe at the front - nice sharp turn in

max castor - ditto above

This should suit your car, and works well on our NZ roads.

A lot depends on how you drive or want your car to handle, one persons
settings are not always right for the next person,
as your car is supercharged you may want to talk to Lou or Ray or even
Clive, all are on this list, as their cars are supercharged, mine is
turbo-charged with 200bhp, Lou and Ray were a great help to me in setting up
my car, the stock settings are very good, but i then copied Rays and i
think Lou's car is pretty close and set mine at -1degree on the front
and -1.1 on the rear the other settings were stock, this transformed the car
to being very neutral instead of the understeer i had before, and i now have
the Koni's set to halfway, but as i have stiffer sway bars you may need to
vary your settings if your is not lower than stock, and as i don't drive as
hard as the names mentioned, i know my car is spot on for handling, and as
Gary settings are about stock this is always a good point to start from,
set your car up for your style of driving, you'll find even stock settings
are still very good, and make sure your tyre pressures are correct and you
have at least 1/2 a tank of gas, and make sure you get a readout before and
after, as all good alignment shops do.
