Yokohama A539 (was: New thread anyone?)

Post by simple » Fri Apr 26, 2002 12:07 am

I also got A539's, just over a year ago when they were released in NZ. They
seem pretty decent to me. I don't have a lot of experience of different tyres,
but I feel like rambling a bit anyway...

When I got the car it was shod with Dunlop Monza 200's - they were shoddy.
Not very good dry, scary wet. Shortly after sliding through an amber light I
couldn't stop for in the wet, I sold them to someone who was prepared to
compromise their safety with cheap tyres.

Bought second hand Falken Ziex ZE-502's, handily premounted on standard
MX5 rims, leftover from when Fletcher bought new rims/tyres. Definite
improvement. The Falkens eventually wore out, as tyres do, strangely
enough. Bought the Yokohama A539:

- the man who was selling them reckoned they were great (not unusual for a
salesman, but he had earned some respect by refusing to fix a puncture in a
previous tyre which was worn [arguably] to the wear limit)

- they're an assymetric design, which I had no way of quantitatively
evaluating, but appealed to my aesthetic sense :-)

- they were cheap ($150 each)

What I've found is this:

- grip in the dry is good - no complaints at all.

- grip in the wet is good, but not fantastic. I have become too cocky on
occasion (some would say 'frequently') & found myself in places I did not
want to be. Both examples that come to mind involve ending up facing the
wrong way. These things were my fault, and I learnt a few good lessons. It's
certainly good to remember that the tyres are not miraculous.

- on hard cornering, the tyres are very vocal. They start squealing quite a
long way before they let go. This is good & bad - it is an aid to knowing how
hard I am pushing things, but makes me sound like a boy racer even when
I'm not pushing all that hard. I've driven on Fletcher's Bridgestone RE711's a
couple of times - they seem to be dead quiet in comparison - under hard
acceleration out of a corner I only knew the back end was slipping by the
feel. For the past year I've been intending to swap wheels with Fletcher
sometime & give them a good test (I'm sure Fletcher would also give my
tyres a workout) - must get around to doing that. From what I gather, no-one
dislikes Bridgestones, from Grid-II to RE-711, everyone seems very happy
with them.

- as for quietness in straight-line driving? Well, the roof is down & there's
plenty of noise other than tyres. I've not been in any MX5 and noticed tyre
noise as an issue.

- the assymetric design is weird. I'm happy with the idea that conditions can
be different between the inside & outside of a tyre, most obviously when
cornering. These tyres are assymetric left to right as well as having a
directional quality to the tread, but they don't make left & right versions. So,
the tyres on the left side of the car present their tread to the road in the
reverse of what the right side presents. How can this be balanced? It's
faintly disturbing.

= overall, I'm happy with them.

Just to round things out, here are some random links about the A539 - the
first link has a reasonable straight-on picture of the tread pattern.

I seem to get shoddy traction at best in the rain and I'm starting to get
sick of it.
What's a good compromise between price and quality?

Just ordered a set of Grid-IIs from Firestone Direct for $129 each,
fitted and balanced (while stocks last). Grid-IIIs are on their
way apparently.

I suppose there always will be a compromise between price and quality.
Personally, I think the weighting should be towards quality. I have the
Bridgestone RE711s (185/60R14) on my stock 14" rims. From memory they cost
me around $170 each. They were the best road tyre I could get at the time.
I have absolutely no complaint with these tyres, either in the wet or dry -
and I drive my car quite hard at times.
I would recommend them to anyone, particularly for the 14" stock wheel.

Regards,
Clive

Scott,

I think you need to tell us what you're starting with...

Are you sick of the traction from some $40 cheapos or are you
unimpressed with the grip from $200+ performance tyres?

We cant make a reasonable price/performance recommendation until we
know what it is you are unhappy with...

Fletch.

you mean u can get tires for $40?!?
I haven't had tyres that cheap since I drove a MK2 Escort, but that's
another story.

I don't know the brand off the top of my head, theyre 14"ers on the factory
mags. They were only about $125 from memory.

I totally agree with you Clive, quality should be the deciding factor.

I'll check the brand and type next time I go to check if my car is still
alright.

Has anyone here got some tyres they CAN"T light up mid-bend in a roundabout in second gear on a wet road?My Fiance does that occassionally and I make a sport of it when conditions allow. What is too little grip in the wet?My "cheapies" only ever let go when I make them...

Even very cheap tires have "enough" grip if you slow down enough...

If you want to drive faster in the rain, you need better tires. Conversely,
if your tires never let go unexpectedly, they are probably fine for you...

Until you come to an emergency situation and you have to brake harder than you
normally would in the wet...

The more grip you have, the better off you are... you can choose to "use all
the grip available" or keep it for a safety margin...

But obviously, more grip generally costs more, and none of us has an unlimited
budget...

As long as you match your driving to the tires you have, thats fine...

Fletch.

first gear seems to be a very low ration and when you try and take off, even
modestly in hard rain, it slips frequently. I do like to drive fasst (within
the speed limit thou, unlike a lot of drivers) but in the rain I drive
accordingly but still it seems to slip a lot when I take off from the lights.

I just bought Grid II's at a bargain price of $315 each same place , grab as
many as you can get, brilliant wet weather tyres.

My "cheapies" will spin in the wet, in first, from rest provided I dump the clutch with 4500 rpm, minimum, dialed up on the tacho...and never let go unexpectedly even when I am caning the car...as a remould of exactly the same compound(s) and pattern as Michelin's own high perfomance rubber, made in Australia, they provide excellent feedback as they near their limits and slide very progressively, indeed.Tyres that suddenly let go and catch you un-awares are unsuited to our roads- that or you are not in touch with your car...

Now hang on a moment you jokers...Lets all agree on what is cheap and what is not...I mean Clives' rather excellant BridgestonRE711's are 185/60 R14, right! But in a lower aspect ratioand/or on a larger wheel would cost MUCH more...Agreed?
So lets compare apples with apples!I say my tyres are cheap-195/50 R15 -at $110 each. And they do perform better than last set of Simex SM8000's!
Some guys are gonna say that Toyo's in 205/40 R17 are great at $250 ea.!Yet that price in 14in. or 15 in. is going to buy you some real doozies!
So lets mention our rim sizes, aspect ratios and tyre sections . Not to mention driving styles and available power before deciding on decent Tyres.
Clive has a Supercharger under his bonnet so Those RE711's get a real work out...If , however you have a stock 1600cc model you can only ever poke 116hp at those rear wheels...
