I've seen the same pale yellow five in Hamilton a few months ago. Its very similar in colour as the STI Impreza's from a few years back. I didn't get a very close look as it was going the opposite direction.
As for the coupe, It looks pretty good to me, though it is a bit of a DB7 ripoff (but then I suppose the origional look of the mx5 was copied from the Lotus Elan). I don't know why you'd buy a coupe and miss out on the top-down driving when you could just buy a convertible five and import one of those Simpson Design hard-tops (as seen in the Top Down mag a few months back) which look remarkably similar to the coupe's roofline.
The best mx5 based car at recent japanese car shows was the one that had all its panels (except doors I think) modified so that it looked like the late 60's mazda Cosmo sportscar. I believe it even had a rotary engine fitted as well. It is rumoured to soon be available as a "kit car" in Japan.

I think the Cosmo you are refering to was more a Cosmo body, cleaned up a
bit, dropped on an MX-5 chassis. And yes it is fitted with a RENISIS rotary
as in the new RX-8.
It was built by a company that apparently does a bit of work for Mazda of
some sort and they are considering making a small run of them, so its siad
anyway. looks cool I think.
