Boot / Trunk release

Post by Chrissy & Tony Hoys » Wed Apr 03, 2002 6:56 am

Does anyone know what the story about this is, how come some of us have got
one and others haven't? I don't think its a model / year thing - I found
this out at our Manawatu / Taranaki recent event.
We are a bit dissapointed aren't we Steve!

It IS a year model thing... except for when owners have added their
own ones...

'90 and '91's never had them... started in '92 I believe?

Thanks for that info Fletch, so the 89's that had them would have been
fitted 'aftermarket'? Is there a procedure to go about fitting them and has
anyone done it?

Yes, if you've seen one in a '89 then its aftermarket...

Various kits are available... The fitting procedure would involve
following the instructions in the kit :-)

I heard of one (electrical) that caught on fire in the boot once...
I have no idea if it was a faulty one, or if it was fitted poorly?

Check with people who do remote door-locks / alarms, etc. Its not
uncommon to use a second button on your alarm-fob as a boot release.

I have one but it's definitely aftermarket, installed in Japan by
first owner. There's a pushbutton inside the cubbyhole on the
transmission tunnel. When I press it an awesome relay "THUNK" comes
from the boot.

If you don't have an alarm in your Jellybean I wouldn't recommend
installing one as the boot is the only really secure place for your
stuff.

My Jan '90 has one. Would rather it didn't really for security reasons.

Yup, My '90 has an aftermarket, sounds identical. It too does the awesome
'THUNK'. I wouldn't recommend owning a jellybean without an alarm though!
I'd be devastated if anything happened to mine!

First job when I bought it was to fit an alarm, a Uniden top of the range VR
thingy with Microwave sensor (the top is always down) and dual immobiliser.
If you're handy with a multimeter and soldering iron its not really
difficult, I've done a few in my time so I didn't need a wiring diagram.
This also gave me the immense satisfaction of fitting central door locking a
couple of weeks ago :) Its really nice to press the key fob and listen to
the doors lock, and the windows wind up :D

Two more jobs for this weekend - I've got some Bass Transducers on the way,
they are Aura Pro's - anybody fit these to a jellybean? Will they fit under
the seats or do I need to fix them behind and lose a bit of legroom? 2nd
job is a Pentium 2 laptop going in the bootwell, 10 Gb of MP3's to listen
too when driving with the top down :) Hope it fits in there with the 3
amplifiers already in place ;)

Keith, you could just disconnect the cable... and then maybe have a trunk release solenoid which is only powered by the ACC circuit !

Hi Chrissy,
You can buy boot release kits for about $60-$70. Cheapest way is to do what I did.
Wait till Dick Smith has the central locking kits on sale for about $50. Only need
two of the solonoids for the doors (benefit of two door sports cars!!!) which means
you have one left for your car and one for a friends. Or you could do four cars with
boot releases. Only other bits you need are a presure switch, a fuse holder and some
wire.

Cheers from Hamilton, Nigel

Jaycar have door solenoids for around $22 each last time I looked. You
don't need to buy a whole kit.

Repco also have a boot release kit, but if you don't need the button/cable
etc the Jaycar one is a much better deal. I have a Jaycar discount card
also ($20 min purchase) that anyone is welcome to borrow.

Jaycar = DSE - $$$

Jay car are in a pale blue building half way down Khyber Pass in
Newmarket.

On the corner of Boston Rd (the one that runs by the prison). Its
almost under the Motorway overpass.

They also have the Bass "thumpers" to put inside your seat for
stupidly small money.. $20 each or so?

I can also recommend their "impulse" brand car speakers...

Electric or cable?

Electric is garneted to be aftermarket...

If cable, is it in the centre console next to the fuel flap like later
cars?

Mine is a late 91 with a boot release next to the fuel cap release. Reading
the different MX5 books that abound it seems to me that what was for example
fitted to "rest of world 92s " was actually fitted to 91 Japanese, and so
on.

mine is a jap 91, no boot release.

It's probably going to come down to the actual factory production month that
determined which did. Whatever the case, it seems to be late '91 or '92+
models.

Yep, mine is manual cable operated and in the cente console beside the fuel
flap opener. Looks factory to me.

Just to confuse things further - our 1990 Roadster has a cable remote fitted
in the centre console beside the fuel cap release...looks decidedly
original.

Ahh Haa! I knew it... the other lady from Manawatu / Taranki who had
hers in a 1990 was convinced it was original too!

Good on ya Fletch, what a neat guy being able to admit a mistake...
It was a great thread though and due to security reasons discussed, I've
decided I'm lucky not to have one. Not so sorry for ourselves now Steve
?(see you tomorrow night)
