When I talk about an MX5 'wave' its a headlight pop up and down. Have I got
this completely wrong?? are you guys just talking about just waving your
hands??

Definately nicer to actually wave I think, the headlight pop up and down takes too long and might mean a speed cop?

The wave, to be authentic, involves momentarily popping up your headlights.
Its universally recognised by MX-5 owners as a hello. Taking a hand off the
wheel and waving in the air is great when greeting family and friends.

I see a guy most mornings going to Wanganui & we wave by popping the lights
with the dash button - That way the lights don't come on & so get confused
with a beware of Road Nazis ahead message. You have plenty of time as a 5
stands out and you are always scanning ahead for tax minimisation purposes
anyway. Sure puts a grin on your face when you get a wave - although I must
confess feels better when the tops down - Anyone else feel guilty if you
pass another 5 & you have your top up?

Unfortunately, those of us with M2's can't wave that way and have to use a friendly hand greeting.

Well this is all very nice but I ALWAYS scope out oncoming Jellybeans
and I have NEVER seen this done in 6 years.

Sorry to throw cold water!

Hey Mark; you're in Newmarket, I'm in Mt Eden, and if you see me coming in a
black MX I guarantee you a wave back! (and I do mean with the h'lights not
the hand)

Matt- Shout yourself a packet of jellybeans, line a few up on the garage
floor next to the car, think colour and shape and you may agree there is at
least a passing resemblance!
(No idea who first noticed this)

I think it was the UK, I know that's what they were called there when
they first came out, I read it in a UK car mag or summat.

Er - isn't the association v obvious?

Jelly bean was coined when the car first came out in NZ 1990.

NOpe I dont feel guilty driving around with the roof on.
Where I work we have a school for the most wayward of children right next
door and I can't see my parked car from where I work.. Frequently we see
these kids playing around with peoples cars. The police have been called
more than once, but can do very little. Our manager has spoken to the person
who administers the school.. but little changes..these kids just do not care
at all, and they're at school with others who are like minded.
Over the xmas break I never had the roof up, but now I'm back at work the
hardtop goes back on, and will on;y come off if it's a really nice weekend.
But I really do enjoy it when I do have the top down.:-)
