Electric window relay?

Post by Grant » Sun Sep 22, 2002 7:49 am

Does anybody know if there is a relay that switches the power to the
electric windows? I want to rewire the windows so I can operate them without
the ignition being switched on. I've done this on my Isuzu Bighorn by simply
removing the relay (that powered only the windows) and inserting a short
wire link in its place. Most convenient.
So far I haven't been able to locate the source of power to the MX5's windows.
Thanks,

Grant in sunny (again) Blenheim.

If you find this and get it done, can you tell me how you did it so I may do
the same

Just checked the wiring diagrams and no relay, straight from a 30amp
fuse in the drivers side fusebox. Without major fusebox surgery it's a
no go. You could locate the power wire going to the switch and parallel
another 30amp fuse in with it, always powered?

Thanks for the information, Graeme.
I assume this fuse feeds only the windows, so it shouldn't be too hard to
re-route input to the fuse by removing it and connecting it to an always
powered circuit. Might be a job for the weekend. I haven't inspected the
fuse box on the drivers side...I didn't know there was one there. Thought
there had to be some fuses inside the car somewhere but haven't located them
as yet. Only had the car 3 weeks.
If I do sort it out, I'll let you know here.

Grant.

As zorruno says, a Haynes manual is what you need. Good schematics and
nice and easy to read. Make sure to use nice big wires as zorruno says
for higher current. That fusebox is a pain to work on, not much room in
there - I know I've just finished adjusting my clutch pedal, without a
torch and its very cramp inducing.

Basically there is a 30A fuse, and a BLK/WHT wire runs to the switches,
should be easy to locate if you trace it back over.

Another possibility is to have a holding circuit that is broken when the
drivers side door is opened? A few of my cars have been like that in
the past, windows operate with the ignition switched off until the
drivers door is opened, should be just a simple holding circuit?
Perhaps a latching relay? Easiest though would be the timer. Total
closure is the best though >:)
