Advice and questions.

Post by evel » Tue Dec 13, 2011 9:34 pm

hey guys, firstly i want to introduce myself, my names Marcus, im 17, from Auckland. I plan on buying a NA MX5 sometime in Feburary with all my pay from working in the holidays plus the money from selling my civic (oohh yeeaah). I be wanting to know for ages, do mx5s have auto reclining roofs? i assume they dont but have never asked anyone. Also when it comes to NA's, is there much noticeable difference between a 1800 and a 1600? is it worth trying to get a 1800 or doesn't it really matter? Thanks in advance, im sure this question has been asked before but being a noob i have to live up to what expected of me and asked the same old questions that have been answered 100 times before!!

Nope. The only ones with the auto-reclining roofs are the NC ones and I believe not all have those.

In regards to the 1.8 vs 1.6, I have a 1.8 and a friend has a 1.6 and I don't think I could downsize. the 1.8 has bigger brakes and slightly more chassis bracing underneath and my one has power steering (I'm a lazy driver). Even though the 1.8 has more power, it's still not particularly fast unless you're going around a corner ;)

Definately go for a 1.8 if you can, as Angreal said, bigger brakes, better diff, slightly more grunt. Nope on the auto roofs, but doing it manually is heaps faster than any auto system.

The 1800 engine isnt that much better but the complete package is a step up

You'll be more than satisfied with an NA6 if you can't get an NA8. Bigger brakes really don't mean an awful lot when you've only got ~950kg to stop, as long as you have discs in good condition and some good quality pads.

I have all the stopping power I need with TRW pads and new rotors. Chassis bracing will certainly help though, but that same bracing will fit to an NA6 and is readily available for only a few hundred dollars.

Just make sure the crankshaft pulley/nose/key are in good condition if you get an NA6, particularly if it's a 1989 or 1990 model.

budget isnt much of a thing, ill just keep saving till i have enough. I want to use it as a daily but also shoot off to track days and have a blast too. my ultimate plan would be to supercharge it, but this is quite long term
