Oil pan sealer

Post by WideOpenThrottle » Wed Jul 06, 2011 9:06 pm

Hi - can anyone recommend a reliable oil-pan sealant as the one i got from Partmaster doesn,t seem to work as i have now had two attempts to seal the pan and for some reason it alway leaks in the same spot at the rear under the curve of the crank where the rubber half-moon sits.
It doesn't help having no English on the tube for instructions!
This a real pain in the neck to do so i need some answers if maybe it's me stuffing up!
I clean & dry all gasket surfaces.
Do i have too much internal pressure?

Have you put the seal in the right way round. They are keyed and it is pretty obvious which way it goes.

I had a similar problem with the front one but second time I sealed it it worked fine.

rear crank seal itself is buggered or not put in correctly,or a sub standard part ??

After inspection of the rubber seal from my first attempt even though it was keyed correctly it had somehow kinked like a train track does when buckled.
I would think that parts from BNT/Partmaster would be reasonable quality?
Next time i might try Mazda direct!.....funny thing is the original leak virtually had no sealer around the rubbers & lasted nearly 300k km if it had never been done before, while i have been putting plenty on as per Workshop manual.
Maybe they need to be free of sealant???.....whats best?

I did a rear crank seal when i did the clutch & it was then that i noticed the leak from the rear of the oil pan.
Looks like the only way to be sure is to take the gearbox out again as there is no way of knowing if one or the other is the culprit

Got bored today so pulled out the gearbox, put the muffler back on & ran the engine till warm, shut it down & then took clutch & flywheel off.
The oil pan rear seal looked fine so i whipped out the newish rear main crank seal & low & behold there was a deformed inside lip [right hand side of pic] which somehow must have folded over slightly during installation!.....here's hoping a new seal carefully put back in will cure the leak!
