Gearbox noise

Post by Paul Murray » Mon Jun 27, 2011 5:31 pm

My NA has done 298k and has had gearbox noise for a very long time, the noise level has slowly increased. Has had regular servicing but am considering trying Red Line MT-90 gearbox oil. Would appreciate any comments on this product or other recommended oils. No difficulty with shifting gears, intention is not do any gearbox work until something breaks.

I am using MT90 but I can't say that it is any better or worse than other gearbox oils. Probably a bit more expensive than other brands.

Simply,
Your bearings in the box are getting tired,Flash oil won't repair tired bearings,
Couple of ways to sort it;
1,drive with the roof down.You won't here it(That's what i do :) .
2,Get it rebuilt.
3,Take a punt on another box.

Basically,The noise will not go away,The gearbox will keep going for awhile yet,particularly if every thing else is mint.

I thought that was the noise an mx5 gearbox makes

I would say 90% of the people on the forum will have the same sound coming from their box

I have never worried about it and wouldn't waste money on fancy oil as brownie has stated

Thank you all for your comments/suggestions.
I will continue to enjoy the drive, turn up the music and ignore the noise.
