Diff oil

Post by WideOpenThrottle » Wed Feb 24, 2010 9:54 am

Because its a possibility i have a LSD, if i were to put LSD oil in and it wasn't a LSD would the limited slip oil do any harm?
Also......Is there any reason why LSD oil shouldn't be used in a manual gearbox?

It appears from the achives that ordinary gear oil is fine for factory fitted LSD so in it goes along with topping up the gearbox.

Diff oil

To the best of my knowledge the only time you need LSD specific oil is if it
is a clutch type LSD. This is possible but not so likely unless your car has
come form Japan looking modified, i.e. been owned by a boy racer who
modified his car, diff upgrades are not cheap so there are usually other
signs of modifications. The standard Torsen just has gears so does not need
to friction modifiers that are in LSD oil. If you put normal diff oil in a
clutch type LSD it can be a throw away depending on the type of plates
inside the LSD.
