Loose crankshaft pulley

Post by Nearly too late » Wed Oct 21, 2009 8:56 pm

The crankshaft pulley has come loose on my 1990 1600 MX5.
I have read about a loctite repair to over come this.
Has anyone done this and how successful was it.

Hi there, I have done it, even before I knew of the repair.

I had discovered the problem while I was stripping the engine, two years ago when I was doing a rebuild.
That engine is still running with the same crankshaft and has had the pulley off since too, just to have a nosey.Fine and dandy.

Just do it once and get it right the first time, then you should have no further problems.

The important thing to do is PUT A NEW WOODRUFF KEY IN, use fresh unopened loctite product, also stick to the torque specification when tightening everything up.

All available data at miata.net in the garage section.

Have no fear, it is not really that much of a problem if carried out correctly.

All the best :D :D :D

Loose crankshaft puuley

Post by Dez » Thu Oct 22, 2009 6:17 pm

It happened on my '94 J-Spec-11 and the repair was quite successful
despite the
crankshaft nose keyway being damaged. (problem was created by PO
inserting the
key in the groove the wrong way)
Used a new crank-pulley bolt as well. Four years on still going strong.

Thanks for your replies.
I have got it in time as there is minor damage to the cranshaft keyway.
I will use a new bolt, key and pulley hub, going by your comments all should be good.
Thanks
