South Island Playweek

Post by MN » Sun Apr 12, 2009 9:26 pm

Just returned from the South Island Playweek - 3 days of track time at Teretonga, Levels and Ruapuna. Fabulous fabulous fun.
:D :D :D :D :D
I had always wanted to drive the southern tracks and when the Playday Organisers planned a week for the 3 tracks my co-driver and I were in. 30 other North Islander's did the same joining about 8 to 15 locals depending upon the track. Cars ranged from a Turbo Escort via a Westfield, 4 Redline (I think that's what they were) sports cars, numerous Mr2's, Supras, various Subaru's (including a station wagon), Falcon V8, Porches, Honda's and a twin turbo v8 Lotus. Local cars included Mx5's, Walkinshaw Commodore, Lotus 11 replica, BMW's and numerous other Subarus.

My car racked up nearly 700 km's on track with 2 drivers plus about 2k of "touring" (we even spent 2 hours being shown over the South Pacific Proving Grounds at Cardrona - what a place). A full tank barely lasted at Teretonga and Levels and we used a tank and a half at Ruapuna. My car had the worst mechanical reliability in 5 years of competion :( - the fan belt needed tightening at Teretonga losing us a "race" each!

The format was the same as the usual Playdays many will have experienced in the NI with a line of fast cars and a line of speed challenged ie us!. Groups of 8 (Teretonga)-12 (Ruapuna) cars at 5 second intervals were sent out. At Levels we slotted into either line and very rarely got lapped and as everyone was very gentlemanly and polite and with no overtaking after the 200m board catching and or passing other cars created no drama. One thing we noticed was the 5 would out corner many of the other faster cars. Most frustrating catching a Porsche Boxter through the back of Teretonga for him to disappear down the front straight, although to be fair after a couple of laps with the silver 5 almost buried in his engine at the elbow he did let me pass and stayed behind on that looooong front straight.

We met up with Gravelben in Teretonga and Levels where he was pedalling his red 5 very quickly. A very tidy white NB was out at Ruapuna as well and his 1800 was certainly able to out accelerate me on the front straight but the Formula R's and mintex pads more than compensated elsewhere.

Ruapuna was probably the best track being wide like Taupo but all 3 required some effort to get a good line. Teretonga we were hitting around 165 before braking for that huge sweeper and about 155 at Levels along the back straight and about 160 at Ruapuna before braking at the 100 m board for the tight left hander (cnr 2), it took a few laps before I could keep my foot flat off the straight into the gentle left before the hard left. Ruapuna used the dipper section and if its of any interest we were taking 2mins 04-05secs for a lap, Levels about 1min 25 and I can't remember Teretonga.

Fantastic fun. Anyone who wants some track time but doesn't want to risk possible racing damage then the track days organised by the PlayDay organisation is the place to do it - a roll bar/cage, racing belts etc are not necessary. Don't search for an excuse not to do it. http://www.playdayontrack.co.nz/

:D

Was certainly a lot of fun, Teretonga and Levels were the first trackdays I've done but definitely won't be the last!

Thanks for the drive in your MX5 at Teretonga, was quite interesting feeling how different it is with sticky tyres, bucket/harness etc. I think a bucket might be next on the list of upgrades for mine. ;)

I was hitting about 165 at Teretonga and just shy of 160 at Levels before braking, best lap times in the low 1:23s at Teretonga (1:22.5 I think in your car) and about 1:26 at Levels.

Plenty of photos to come once I get my computer fixed!

Some photos as promised, plenty more still to come once I get them uploaded. Just a sequence of mine at Levels to start with but have plenty of the other cars (like your MN) too.

Ben...good to see you have hit the circuit!
Passed up on trailering my car to Teretonga weekend before last due to crap forecast - didn't have snow tyres!
Weighed car this morning..950kg ready to race, incl hardtop and 6-point roll cage, so quite pleased. Still another 20 or so kg to go...
Have a 22mm front antiroll bar from an NB now surplus to requirements if you are interested (and I've painted it red!!) Will need appropriate end links to fit an NA, unfortunately. :)

Gravelben....me thinks you need a stiffer roll bar for the front!

And one for the back as well to keep things balanced?

Its a wee way down the priority list (unless a real bargain) though, 2 new tyres needed on each car at the moment! Legacy gets first dibs as its running on the space saver and the MX5 is quite entertaining with knackered GT radials on the back in the rain

Don't worry about the rear, you don't need to change it. Some people even remove it completely. Depends on your spring and shock setup though.

Tired standard springs and shocks - 218k on the clock and as far as I know could still be the originals!

I think my main concern with stiffening up the front and not the rear would be inducing understeer, or are they soft enough to be out of the zone where this would occur?

Tks for the photos Gravelben, they look really good and bring back a few memories. I'll email you in a couple of weeks when I'm back from offshore and get some from you. It should be noted that we set up both "5"s on track at Teretonga for the photographer and he didn't take any of the 2 of us together! I did a front left brake pad and left rear as well at Ruapuna and drove back from ChCh to Wgtn barely using the brakes, stuffed the front rotor though. Strange the way pads can wear because the front pad that went through to the backing plate was the only pad that was excessively worn the other 3 on the front were fine and would last anotehr couple of meetings. Shows you have to check occassionally and rotate if necessary.

Hi Mark

Check your slider pins are clean and well lubricated. Are you going to 1.8 brakes now??

I've just put in new pads on the front. The pedal was getting a bit long. There was still about 3-4mm of pad left but I didn't like the amount of pedal movement. I suppose they were due for replacement anyway, they had done 2 full Targa NZs, Targa Bambina and a few track days.

Cheers

Thread from the dead - did a Playday at Ruapuna as well just before christmas, cracker of a track!

Was running pretty consistent 2:05s throught the day and I think down into the 2:04s towards the end but nobody was timing me then. Pretty happy with that on cheapo road tyres anyway, by the last lap of each session the rears were gone off and I was sliding it round rally-style - which was only a second or two slower, less difference than I expected.

As was said last year it takes a few brave pills the first time you keep it flat through the kink off the end of the straight, on a good lap I was carrying 160-165kph through there and braking at the 100m board. Infield esses were an awkward speed, going up into third I'd bog down a bit so ended holding just shy of the limiter in 2nd right though.

By the way Mark, did I ever get round to posting you a cd of high-res photos from Playweek last year? So long ago now I've completely forgotten.

Yep I'd forgotten too still love a set if you've still got them. We used the "dipper" part of the track the day when we were there. That first hairpin was the most difficult I found and yes used 2nd with a quick change to 3rd then back again as it was on the limiter too long in 2nd. But a great track and again yes after lap or 2 that left hand kink at the top of the front straight was flat. I don't know which of the 3 southern tracks is the best but my overall favourite track (haven't tried the Downs yet) is Taupo 2. I think its quite technical, which is why many don't like it, wide with many possible lines and different cambers on or off the corners.
cheers,

Mark

Yeah the dipper is a fun piece of track! found that with a bit of confidence I could make up a bit of time over the fast heavy cars down through there.

Most fun I had all day was chasing round a Datsun 1200 racecar, we were setting very similar times so good fun playing catch-me-if-you-can.

I did boil over my power steering fluid playing drifty games once my tyres went off though!

You have PM re photos :)

No I was in ChCh at a wedding. Planning on doing the Targa Wgtn this year and maybe the Targa Taranaki, if they are on again. I haven't check entry fees but if similar to last year then it was quite reasonable to do the 2 days.
cheers,

Mark
