Does anyone have, or know where I can find a suitable socket to remove the 41mm nut that holds 5th gear onto the mainshaft of the gearbox. As it needs to fit over the length of the tailshaft which is about 26mm in diameter, even a 1" square drive socket will not fit over. The Enthusiasts Manual suggests using a cold chisel however I am not keen on removing the edges off the nut as it needs to be re-tightened to over 100 lb-ft.
I'm on the North Shore if anyone has anything. Unfortunately the local Mazda dealer no longer has this tool.
Thanks
Euen

Thanks Larry. Unfortunately a deep socket would not go on as the tailshaft is 26mm in diameter. The shaft is about 600mm long and the nut is recessed inside the synchro assembly which means you can't use a ring spanner.
If I can't find anything I am thinking about chopping a 41mm socket in half and welding a length of pipe between the sqaure drive section and the hex section.
Cheers

Well the tool problem is solved. As described in my previous post I now have the appropriate tool for the job. (no lewd comments please). Thanks to my neighbour, Keith, who cut the socket and welded the extension onto it for me. The nut has been removed and I have now found why I couldn't select 5th. The teeth on the reverse gear side of the had synchro had worn, leaving a burr that was strong enough to stop the synchro moving in the other direction to select 5th. Now to find the bits to fix it.........
Thanks
