Engine stalling

Post by suburban_ennui » Mon Jun 04, 2007 12:04 pm

Hi there. Here's a question someone might be able to help with. I find that, quite often, when I come to a stop at the bottom of a hill, my engine splutters and stalls, or else shudders on the point of stall and I need to give the accelerator a slight kick to keep it going. This ONLY happens when the nose of the car is pointed downmards. (Never uphill or on the flat.) It's been a constant hassle ince buying the car a year or so ago, but is starting to irritate me a bit more.

Is this a question of the idle speed needing adjusting? (And if so, how do I do that?) Or, if not, anything other suggestions appreciated.

Cheers.

Lawrence

PS - not sure if I'm allowed to do this, but I have a factory NA rear spoiler and drilled bootlid in BRG for sale on TradeMe if anyone is interested.

... the car has been serviced a couple of times, and had a new air filter fitted both times. In case anyone is going to suggest that. Thanks.

Does it vary according to how much fuel you have?
I had a volvo and if it went below 1/4 full then it spluttered and died, the cause was a split hose to the in-tank pump which was sucking in air when the fuel level dropped below the hose.

check that the throttle butterfly is clean.... often it can become clogged up causing stalling issues.also in the same way of thinking the cold idle valve can stick closed.

Another thing to check is your battery....silly i know but when i had a dud battery it would do exactly the same thing.Car would start ok but the load of the engine would cause a stall when approaching lights.

excuse my ignorance ... whereabout do I check the throttle butterfly and/or cold idle valve? I'm something of a newbie when it comes to anything engine-related

the throttle body is the bit that your throttle cable attatches to on the inlet manifold. you just need to remove the plastic intake duct from it and squirt some throttle body cleaner in there and clean with a lint free cloth.
