Big Red Button setup. Anyone?

Post by Shermio » Sun Jun 04, 2006 11:59 am

So I just wanted to know if anyone has done a 'Big Red Button' install (Those who don't know what it is, it's the start button used in Honda S2000, where you turn the key and have to push the button to start the car)

I have been thinking of doing an install on a MK2.5 but would like to see if there is anyone here with experience with the install and if it is easy to do or not. The cig lighter is the perfect place for it!

The US site is good on info but because of the different specs there might be problems following their instructions... :P

Apparently, the BRB for a NA is much simplier since there's no imboliser in the way... and I just realise that my Dynatron might not like the idea of a BRB.... I need to do more homework and get back to this...

Hmmm, there is also another option of just splicing the wires so that turning the key will also start the car... the best of both worlds!

Plenty of people in UK have done it. You could try a search here
<www.mx5ocforum.co.uk> AFAIK it is quite easy.

Yeah I know, I have been reading up on the US site as well... I was just hoping that someone local had done it and could provide info on how it is done with photos and what they used where they got it from sorta thing ;)

Here's the link to this discussion on the list a couple of years ago. If this does'nt work you can just go to the club website, click on MX5List, and look thru the archives. The first post was on 23 May 2004. Hope it helps, Vince.

How about a Maclaren SLR start button in the gear knob?

I'm happy to buy a button etc and spend some taking pics and documenting if anyone is actually able to help with the install (because I'm useless with electrics).

So if you know what your doing and have a couple of hours to play - let me know (beer and pizza provided).

Yeah Im planning on investing in a BRB and have been talking with the guys at Dynatron as to how it will affect my alarm and they said that for some reason the imboliser will not longer function (I think they are pulling my leg as Im sure I could just splice the ignition to have both the key and the BRB work)

Im still searching for relevant information on the step by step process... I will keep you posted!

Hi all ,

My first post here,

I've just installed a start button in my NA, Instead of having to turn the key I've also installed two switches, one for the ACC one for the IGN. I've removed the whole ignition barrel so there is no steering lock. Starting is now a case of, disarming thh alarm and immobilsers from the keyfob, jump into the car "James Bond style" throw the switches and push the start button and she roars into life.

I'll post install details if anyone wants them.

MatBat welcome! You won't get away that easily - we want pics!!! This
is exactly what I have wanted to do for years.

Firstly, where are the switches?

Can the ACC be switched on and battery wasted - or does the alarm need
to be off before ACC can be used?

How did you get around the alarm override thing - i.e. to override most
alarms, usually it involves doing something with the key - e.g.
switching it to ign a couple of times or something.

cheers

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Really it's not difficult to do, I'll try and get some pics today of the finished product, but unfortunately I have no pictures of the installation process.

Basiclly, the igniition barrely turns a rotary switch (located within the steering wheel cowling. Using a multimeter find the wire that has a continous 12V+ supply, using this you can then connect a wire to this supply and touching the other pins activate the acc (you'll know because the radio will switch on but not the IGN) or the the IGN. (this is just a case of finding what does what. From there it's just a case of soldering in a switch for each seperate pin from the 12V supply. one of the other pins will activate the starter (only when the ignition is switched on however) For this I used a Push button (momentary on) switch, however because it's not rated for high currrent draw I've had to wire in a relay to take the load off the circuit. (my advice would be to get a stronger switch to get around this problem.) From there it's a case of checking it all works and finding somewhere to put the switches. Assuming like me yoiu don't want teh steering lock then you'll need to remove teh security bolts holding the lock barrel on and remove this completely. Hope that helps.

If anyone wants help and is near Christchurch then I'd be happy to give you a hand!

Matbat, do you have any interlocking to prevent you switching the Ignition on first, before the Accessories, and much much more important, to disable the start button once the engine is running. The thought of the starter trying to engage with the engine running brings tears to my eyes!!
As you are using a relay in the start circuit, it would not be to hard to use an oil pressure switch to disable the start relay once the engine starts.

There's no interlocking to prevent switching IGN on before ACC but I haven't found it a problem, and you can drive fine with the ACC switched off as all it seems activate is the Radio, Cigar Lighter from what I gather. Indeed preventing re-start once the engine is running would be good idea. I haven't toched it yet though. You just need to warn passengers "NOT TO TOUCH!". The oil pressure switch is a good idea.

Off topic, but is there a section in this forum to organise a Club Meeting?
Was thinking of having a Christchurch based meet open to all members

Anyone keen?

I had a look under Molly's Dash the other day... well tried... I think I would need to take the seats out first before I can work in that space...

The problem with mine is the darn alarm system... although very good... it's a PITA to get the electrical work done on the ignition... but some photos will be good to get us all started!

(The NA cars have for some reason a much simplier electrical system... :(

Thank's MatBat

Cheers for the reply, any idea how I can contact this club? I've done some searches on google but only found the national club which doesn't seem to list any CHCH events.

Maybe we could organise a forum members get together and have a thrash round Ruapuna raceway, followed by a BBQ sometime when the weather is warmer? I'm keen to meet some fellow enthusiasts to compare cars and exchange ideas. Would be great to see some cars from up North too!

You could try these people perhaps: gailandhylke@paradise.net.nz. They were
involved with organising the anniversary meeting last year so I imagine are
still involved with the Christchurch group. They are a friendly lot (well
they would be, they drive MX5's) but are not affiliated with the National
organisation as I understand it.
