windscreen wiper repainting?

Post by suburban_ennui » Sat Nov 18, 2006 8:33 pm

hi all. Just back from a lovely one-week roadtrip around the East coast (mostly around the East Cape) in my new-ish 1990 V Spec. Thankfully the car held up well, and we struck good weather and were able to have the top down most of the time.

Anyhoo ... I'm not sure if this is a common issue, or just my car, but the paintowork on my windscreen wipers is in very bad condition, and, or course, with an MX5 it's particularly noticable because of the big 'wing' on one of the wipers. Mine have faded/flaked to a mottled grey/brown colour, and ideally I'd like to make them black as easily and cheaply as possible.

Can anyone suggest/recommend how I'd go about repainting them? Is there any type of automotive paint especially for these sorts of applications? Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

Cheers

Lawrence

I took mine apart and sprayed them in a low gloss black from a can of paint I just happened to have. I was pleased with the result - seems to me that you want a bland finish that doesn't stand out.

yeah, I basically just want to replicate the original matt black - no bling.

Did you just use an off-the-shelf black spray? Or was it some kind of automotive paint? Acrylic or enamel?

I recommend spraycote black as it goes on very well.. I NEVER use duplicolor as it always runs or gets "holes" in the paint no matter how fussy i am with the preparation. The spray cote seems oblivious to how well youve prepped and goes on really well.

Depending on condition & degree of fussiness it may pay to give the larger surfaces a quick rub with 600 grit wet & dry sandpaper.

I'm afraid the can I used was on it's last legs and has been thrown out. I sanded mine back lightly, it always helps to give the new paint a "key."
Again, if you're using the matt black type of finish a good clean result that looks original is all you require. I suppose the boy racers chrome theirs...?

I've used Duplicolor many times and never a problem, but I've always used an undercoat and then misted on the first 2 or 3 coats before applying a heavier wet coat. If the can is too close then air bubbles may appear.
cheers,

Mark
