No Spark

Post by Murray50 » Fri Dec 30, 2016 7:36 pm

My NA6 was running fine then the engine died. after stopping for a few minutes I restarted it and headed home, several stops later we got home. After cleaning the air filter the engine ran fine. Two days later it wouldn't start. The engine cranked but won't fire. I discovered weak spark so got new plugs. Great spark (No.1 anyway). Still wouldn't start. Replaced the fuel filter and had fuel getting to the Injector Rail. After a neighbour had a look we had no spark at all. Replaced the coil pack. Still no spark (except the occassional cough)
What could be the problem???? ECU or Igniter maybe.... How would I find out??
Please help, I miss driving my MX

Difficult to diagnose without trial and error replacement as you have tried.
It sounds like either the igniter or ECU as you have suggested, but could
be something as simple as a broken earth wire.
Are you a member of the MX5 Club of NZ?
If you are I have a spare igniter and ECU you could borrow to try.

sounds like it could be ether the igniter or cas on some cars the cas wiring goes brittle right by the plug so cold be a broken wire.

Forgot to say after all that I do have spark on one coil and not the other, but its the same on both the old and new coils. Again (to me) back to ECU or Igniter. ???????

It sounds like the igniter, or it could be the wiring from the igniter to the coils, as there are separate feeds from the igniter to each coil pack. The wire colours are red and white. Have a look to see if one has broken, or partially broken.
If you can't find anything obvious and want to borrow an igniter, PM me. I will be home for a few hours tomorrow, then away again until the 8th.

No Spark

It turns out that the CAS can fail and still provide spark to one coil. CAS changed, car goes again :D
