Well I've seen it all now.
My MX failed its WoF, passed everything except, worn rear pads.
How worn?
Don't all brake pads "wear" that's the idea isn't it? Um yes, but they will need attention before the next WoF...................how the hell does he know??
Did the car fail the braking test......No
But it did fail the warrant because in the opinion of the tester I may require rear pads before he can fail me next time?
This doesn't appear right to me, either your car passes, or fails, how can it fail; not due to an actual defect, but because the tester feels it may fail at a later stage.
Wouldn't that be true for just about every tested component??
Bulbs may fail, tyres, seatbelt retractors, indicators wipers, heck the whole car.

So due to his miraculous incite, I now need rear pads, anyone in Christchurch know of a fair priced brake guy?

From the sources I can find manufacturers minimum is 1mm of friction material.

You have a right to ask them which regulation it is failing under. Ghis then puts them on the spot to substantiate their decision.

As best i recall from when i had my wof ticket several years ago the wof inspection is a snap shot at the time of inspection. I dont believe the inspector would be able to give you the manufacturers minimum lining thickness as stated in number 23, but, they are airing on the side of your safety so you should be happy they have noticed the low pads. Perhaps you should discuss with you mechanic why the low pads were not noticed during you routine maitainence services?

I got failed on rear brake pads on my BMW X3, which has sensors in them that throw up warning's when your pads are coming up to be changed, and warnings hadn't gone off.

This was at VTNZ, and no matter how much I tried to convey this matter, they wouldn't budge. So waited till it was due for it's service, and got the WOF at my local BMW service place, got a WOF, and they just said that pads were getting low, but not to worry till the warning light came up.

They could have said there was ~ X mm of brake pad remaining and they need replacing/servicing very soon. It seems akin to failing a car with 2mm of tread remaining because the tyres might wear out before the next WOF.

Strangley enough i was in a customers workshop today and heard him pass a car on a wof with a borderline tyre, he said " it passes as the tyre is just within limits today, but it wont last till the next wof so you will need to get it replaced before then". So it sounds like he would have passed your wof with low pads. Worst thing about wofs is the inconsistency between inspectors as to what passes and what fails.

A warrant inspector can fail your car if he believes the car unsafe. He doesn't dismantle to confirm. If he believes your pads are close to 1mm of material left he fails it. Simple n safe.

i once got failed for my adjustable suspension.....

i told the guy it was all legal and on the cert plate that i got WHEN I FITTED THE TURBO CHARGER! ....... DUMBASS.

Simple rule of thumb is, if your car is modified, even with a cert plate, don't bother taking it to a VTNZ station, anything that isn't a normals plan jane box they just don't know what to do with it. I don't even bother taking my MX5 to one, they would just have a spazz and their heads would then explode.

Hmm, could be interesting to watch.

Well to add insult to injury I was caught at a "checkpoint" on the way
back from my "failed" WoF.
The police lady looked at my warrant report and noted all the boxes were
ticked as passed, BUT the comment penned across it "rear brake pads
worn" so took pity on my and gave me a ticket as a warning, I just have
to get the passed warrant form to them in 14 days.

SO: I went to my mechanic, Chester (his wife had an MX5 for years) and
asked for new rear pads, and guess what, he reckons the current pads
were good for another 15K easy.
I then took the old pads to another "Mazda mechanic", who was even more
generous, he says 20K.............................darn!

So you have to ask, where are the controls on the idiots doing warrants?
Who do they answer to, because the seem to be a law unto themselves.

Pretty much summed up why I'll never go to VTNZ, they've generally been a headache the whole time and are expensive for a job they don't do particularly well

I hate VTNZ and will never go back after bad service (grumpy attitudes) and questionable judgments from them.

I have always had better experiences at garages with people who actually work on cars and can see when a car has been modded correctly and safely.

Just in regards to the cop not giving you a ticket, I thought you had 28days from the point of failure to fix the problems, and you were still legally allowed to drive the car during that time???

You should take the so called worn pads back to the vtnz that said they wouldnt pass. and ask for your money back..on the wof test..as the guy who checked it obviously has no idea what he is doing
