Miat's thrown another wobbly - See most recent post

Post by 4A-GE » Tue May 20, 2014 11:03 am

Monday morning:
Cranked and cranked and eventually fired with some black smoke. Fuel's obviously getting there.

Today (tuesday): Cranked and cranked, no amount of gas pedal helped. Refused to start.

Battery and starter are obviously going because it cranks over. Will be changing fuel filter tonight if I have the right tools (not at home so have the factory tyre change kit and that's about it).

Wtf else could it be?

Suspect dodgy coil (grr), may just be a loose lead. Didn't check this morning - Had to find alternate transport quickly.

Update:

Cranked and cranked again just a half hour ago. Pulled the plugs out - Plug 3 was fine, the rest were RUSTY AS FUCK.
For whatever reason, after looking at all 4 plugs and not doing anything with the leads, it started. This explains why it sort of dips when I knock it out of gear, parking or sitting at the lights or whatever.

So, all that aside, who reckons I need new leads? I figure, if they aren't sealing properly they're probably the issue.

Try your plugs first as you are a poor student. Just dont get water down the tubes when cleaning. Thats prob where the rust has started from. If you have further issues again then grab some leads.

Agree plugs first (they are cheep) then maybe borrow some leads first to see if that is the problem. This will save you from spending $100.00 if that is not the cause.

Plugs I'm going to go buy after I reckon I've bashed out enough report for this bs assignment. Stick'em in in the carpark and if it's still arse then I'm 12 metres away from leads, lol.

The leads are blue NGK but look kinda old. Seeing as I can't really wait on leads to come in the mail, do repco or super cheap sell the same lead kits?
Super cheap sell Bosch schit so I'm going to assume they only have the super expensive leads. Repco must do NGK leads, right?

That will actually be your clutch switch broken.
If the revs change when you go in and out of gear with the clutch in it will be a faulty switch

the ecu either needs to see neutral on the gear box or clutch to kick the car into ecu controlled idle.

its very common if your in Auckland i can fix for you its not hard.

Oh, well ok, feck. If it keeps happening I'll PM you. Both clutch cylinders were replaced quite early in the year - Could that be the instigator?

Off to repco in an hour or so because it's closest to school. 8)

New plugs and a bit of wd40 seems to have sorted the issue. Suspect my timing is slightly out, so if anyone is free friday morning and feels the need to come and set my timing to 14 BTDC, please do!

Otherwise, thread closed - everyone out.

Ok.

Over the past couple days, the poor miat has had more trouble starting.
It'll crank and crank, and eventually fire and run.
Twice it has started first or second pop but flobbled out and coughed and died.
Giving it gas once it's started after being silly and cranking for 10 years produces a waft or two of black smoke, so we know fuel's getting in there - Is it possible it's flooding?
The spark plugs and leads are brand new so I sincerely doubt they're the problem. The plugs will be replaced at 160 (ticked over 158 today, 157 when they went in) because I'm anal about when things get done.

I'd like to know which bits probably on its way out so I can replace it before it becomes a proper issue. Thankfully it isn't the starter!

Spark, fuel, compression. You need all 3.

I'd look at doing a compression test before throwing more parts at it (be sure to unplug CAS to disable fuel and spark to avoid damaging your ignition coils)

How does the engine run when it starts? Smooth? Rough and lumpy? Down on power? Any odd behaviours?

Spark gets there - Slowly.
Fuel is there.
Compression is there - Thing sounds like a firecracker up in the rev range.

It runs fine once it's started. Coils?

If it's running fine without misfiring, especially under load the coils are probably fine, I'd look at other options.

Like a fire cracker ...?
