Best method for engine removal

Post by Snapfrozen » Fri May 16, 2014 3:38 pm

Right so my engine is definitely poked. Which leaves me with a simple question.

Google tells me there are 2 usual approaches.

Unplug loom, remove peripherals, then...

Option 1. Remove gearbox then the engine seperately

Option 2. Pull them out together

Who has used what method and why was it good or bad?

I'd say pull them out together, was pretty easy and it's easy to line the gearbox up on the floor, there are pros and cons for both methods though.

YMMV.

As I don't really do much work on my car (2LOW2C fixes everything I break when I try), from what I've seen Paul do to my car I'd say pull them out together? Something about a couple of bolts being frustrating to get to.

Definitely both together and I have found it pays to remove the radiator and ignition coil for a bit of extra room and remember to drain your gearbox or oil will poor out of the drive shaft end.You can get it out without removing the PPf but on refitting its a two man job if you don't.And obviously you will remove the bonnent![you knew that!].

I even dropped the sway bar down so as to enable it to come forward a bit before I lifted.

I've done 6 removals now for different people. Take it out together as one unit. Its far easier as the top gearbox bolts are a bitch to get undone.
Its far easier then to change the clutch/flywheel/whatever then. Just be careful when you pull the engine out that you don't crush the pipes along the top of the firewall.

For what it's worth I lifted motor out and left the gearbox in place .
It wasn't hard apart from the top two bolts even they weren't that bad
