Hi all

Post by Ken.McNoe » Mon Apr 28, 2014 12:37 pm

Morning everyone,
One of the members suggested I do an introduction, good point -here it is.

So I've recently brought a 1.8 1997 Red MX5 (NZ New) it's the 3rd MX5 I've owned. Previous models being the 2001 and 1990. I'd been looking for the last of the pop up head light model for a while, absolutely my favourite shape!

The car was in pretty shocking condition when I brought it but it's since had a lot of servicing and valeting and come up to a pretty good standard. I've also had a new Bluetooth stereo and speakers fitted by rapid radio in Auckland and it's got a new licence plate "I MEDIC". Next on the 'to-do' list is having the seats reupholstered and the spoiler fitted. Lastly it'll be sent for a respray (eventually - the cut and polish has brought it up fairly well!)

Personally, I work for a company called International SOS as an Intensive Care Paramedic. I do 6 weeks overseas (currently Papua New Guinea) and 6 weeks in New Zealand (off work). I'm currently working on a post-grad in aviation medicine through Otago.

I live in Browns Bay.

Ahh, can't think of anything else. I'm sure I'll see you all around.

Cheers
Ken

Howdy Ken,

You sound like an interesting chap (not surprising you're into MX5's).

Pretty certain I've seen your car, plates like that 'stand out', will definitely pull you over next time I spot you anyways!

You got your stereo kit done by 2low2c's mate... that gnarly Honda race car in the showroom at Rapid was built/maintained by 2low2c.

Nice one!

Hey,
Oh cool, yeah I had my last MX5 stereo fitted there also - they are okay to deal with. the MX5 is going back to them when I get home to have the seat speakers installed - just brought new ones with brackets from the UK via ebay.

what were you thinking about doing to the seats? leather? or just some more OEM covers? some people have had success with just washing the covers or even re-dyeing them with "rit dye"

hi mate,
I've had leather in my last to (non mx5) new cars and I really didn't like it! to sticky in the heat - so going to go for a new fabric upholstery with the standard vinyl backing (similar to the original but just new and nicer) and probably get the red MX5 logon put on the headrest - over the speakers. I've decided on black fabric with red stitching. I really want them stripped down, foam updated then recovered :)

I agree about the leather, especially with MX5 seats in the NA as they don't have the biggest side bolsters.

I'd recommend an alcantara type fabric if you are getting them recovered! It's a grippy synthetic leather, great for extra support.

oh yes alcantara! yum!

if you do a google for "catskins (or is it catskinz??) they do leather and i think other fabrics for mx5 seats. i think you may still be able to buy the oem covers brand new from mazda USA

hey gents,
thanks for the advice. does the alcantara fabric heat up the same as leather ? or faux leather? I just checked out the Castskinz website, looks great but seems to be similar prices to rve.co.nz (they put leather into my previous Suzuki swift sport).

alcantara is more of a suede so doesnt transfer heat like smooth leather...having said that nay black fabric left in the sun is going to give you friedbutt syndrome.

thanks MrGrey :) Ditto.
I think a person in full respiratory and cardiac arrest and/or having lost a leg is far far far les traumatic to deal with than having to put a spoiler on my own car :) lol - some things just should be left to the experts :)

well, I am a first-aid'er and I have not only put a spoiler on my mx5 but I have dealt with a guy cutting 3.5 of his toes off with a chainsaw when he had a forestry accident.

to be honest, I'd take the job fitting a spoiler any day of the week

Welcome!

I like your car, as Harlan said, it really does look familiar!

I'm just over the hill in Murrays Bay if you ever feel like a beer and a yarn.

Sounds great mate - definitely keen to catch up! Always looking for things to do when I am on leave in NZ. I just brought the car when I was last back so I used it a lot! lol
