New soft top help

Post by 4A-GE » Fri Feb 07, 2014 4:09 pm

Welp, seems I can't catch a break.

Discovered a nice 2" rip in my soft top, which goes through the plastic window and into the zip out canvas section.

The inside of the roof looks a bit meh; the zip seams have mostly come off and the window is cloudy, so I'd rather replace the whole thing than just the window so's to avoid potential trouble later on.

Required: New top with glass window; prefer non zip-out model you can just dump down.

Googled Al's upholstery and all I found was an 025 number, so that's out.
MX5 mart is a bit of a hike away; cost of going down there and time and whatnot offsets the low supply price.

Suggestions and recommendations, please?

I got mine from Dandycars.co.uk.
Including the postage it was still cheaper than any in NZ, fitted it myself a cpl of years back & it's still like new! Very happy with it.
I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

Try Trotskies in Manukau, tel 09 263 9486, mobile 021 365 116. Colin can repair or replace a soft top as well as provide glass or PVC windows.

Now we're gettin' closer to the money! The UK site decided NZ wasn't on their post radar.

I have generally found that this is based on laziness. I was after some PC components from the UK and was told that it was not possible for them to ship to NZ due to import laws etc. So I googled the regional couriers and got quotes and emailed him back with their quotes and contact details and all of a sudden it magically became possible for them to send to NZ.

kinda frustrating to have to do a retailers job for them.

I hope you meant sitting.
I could be swayed, I'm cheap. PM pics and more details.

Here's lookin' at you, amazon.

Yes, it is arse. Could start a flame war by saying the problem was you were trying to buy pc parts, but I often get to my amazon checkout to find that, oh, "One or more of your items could not be shipped to your address".

Actually, dickheads, it can, you just don't want to.

Yeah it happens, 99% of the time costs the same as postage to Aus. -meh they can't list every country!
I just emailed them, they got back to me pretty quick. Quote was cheap & it arrived in a week.
I also got their install DVD, it made it SO easy to fit! -but I'm a visual person...

Al's Upholstery used to support the club quite extensively with prizes (New soft tops etc) and big discounts, but unfortunately he passed away several years ago.

I've got a one-piece EZ-ON with glass window.

Compared to a cloudy plastic window, you can see the car directly behind you, but backing out of a park still requires a degree of faith. The glass window is smaller than the plastic window.

The glass window tops don't fold as nicely the OE top, and on an NA frame the 4th bow doesn't pull itself closed like on the NB frame, so there is a bit of a technique to getting the 3rd and 4th bows to come together and have the canvas slide over them.

The glass window tops require more room to fold, which is incompatible with a lot of roll bar designs.

The install was terrible; a previous owner had it done. I've tidied up bits of the install but as it wasn't done correctly it has worn badly. I've had the canvas around the window crack (rear support straps incorrectly installed), and the 3rd bow is damaging the top -- EZ-ON's warranty requires that felt pads are installed there but whoever did this install neglected to do that.

Would not recommend.

Are you sure that's going to work? How is the roof going to go down if you have a non zip out glass rear window?

edit; I see my question has been answered above.
