Broken thermstat return tube

Post by warrior » Wed Jun 26, 2013 4:20 pm

I did a radiator flush and refilled with new fluid and had a leak appear. There is a hose that goes from the top of the thermostat housing down the front of the engine then onto a 90 degree pipe that fits into the front of the block. The 90 degree pipe snapped off in my hand and spilt all the new fluid over the garage floor (better than breaking when I was driving)

QUESTIONS

1. What is this tube called?
2. How is it put into the block? screwed? pressed?
3. Where can I get a new one from?

Help please, the cars not going anywhere at the moment

Right after a bit of looking around it is the tube that the 'WATER PUMP INLET PIPE" attaches to , can this be replaced or do I have to buy a new inlet pipe (the whole unit)

And if I have to buy the whole unit does anyone know the best place to buy one from?

you can get that part from mazda. if it doesnt seal up then youll have to whip the tstat top off and drill/tap it with a 1/8" BSP tap and chuck a hose barb in there.

this is a very very common fault with them and they should really be replaced or upgraded when doing a cambelt. The same goes with the waterpump inlet which is the same size.

that fitting allows water to pass accross the thermostat and allows it to operate. without it that cast neck fitting is a dead end to water, so your block would overheat before the water in the neck got hot enough to open the Tstat.

Thanks guys, next question. The metal pipe has broken at the 90 degree bend, can I jus get a longer piece of rubber hose and attach it to what is lefty of the pipe? There is plenty of length to attach and secure a new hose and clamp.

I don't see why this wont work?

you can buy a drill bit/BSP tap and fittings for under60 bucks easy and youll be on your way. i wouldnt trust just putting a hose on the unbarbed pipe as it will easily blow off. you can buy the brass BSP fittings in a 90degree fitting also. its what i used to make my dual feed fuel rail mod.

If you go the way of repairing the 90° nipple use 1/8" bsp not 1/4" bsp like i tried

If you are any good at soldering I have successfully soldered a nib on these type of pipes with a blow lamp or reasonably heavy soldering iron which will stop the hose coming off.
You will need to remove it,cut it to unrusted metal & and use soldering fluid.
Might cost all up around 50 cents! :D

I only just managed to get it out by removing the airbox and moving aircon pump. Would be slightly easier if you remove the power steering pump as well

Might be easier to remove it from underneath...either way you will have to drain the radiator.

Once its out you may be able to take it to someone who could put a small flare on the end of the pipe to prevent the hose slipping off instead of solder.
