Na big brake upgrade

Post by Enth » Thu May 16, 2013 6:04 pm

I need to replace the front rotors on my 1991 1.6l MX5. So I thought I'd do the whole 1.8l big brake upgrade.

As far as I've read all I need are the 270mm 1.8 rotors and the caliper brackets, right?

I'm trying to get genuine parts from Mazda, does any one know the part codes I could give them so they can put an order through for me?

On another note, what are good pads to use with this set up if I'm using the car as a daily but attend the occasional track/drift/ghymkhana day?

Cheers.

Found the part numbers to the caliper bracket on this site

http://www.bigllama.com/miata/brake/bigbrake.htm

NA75-33-291 - Front Left
NA75-33-281 - Front Right
NA75-26-29X - Rear Left
NA75-26-28X - Rear Right

Now just need the part numbers for the rotors.

I recommend you get the correct springs that go between the pads to prevent rattles. I did the upgrade on my 1990 and the pad rattle drove me mad. Finally got springs and clips from a place in the UK. Problem solved.

Also you will need to extract the rubber inserts from the old brackets. These were hard to remove on mine. Finally succeeded by using a stiff piece of wire and CRC to carefully work around the outside to free without damage. They fit the new mounts

I have NB rotors [255mm dia] and calipers [$50.00] on my fronts and they do just fine with EBC yellow race pads...no point going to bigger set-up and using standard pads!
Have heard Bendix ultimates are sufficient.

I have yellow EBC on the back as well and need to be warm /hot to work best so the downside is my handbrake doesnt work so well when cold.

The 1.8 pads are bigger in area than the 1.6 so regardless of pad material you are getting bigger grip.

I have a front set of 04 NB Sport calipers and pads that can sell if interested, haven't got the rotors for them.

Yeah for sure but i cant see any point in wanting bigger brakes and then only using standard pads...do it right and put in upgraded pads as well! :D
