How is it that a massive new motorsport complex has been built waaaaay down the bottom of the country and yet Hampton Downs still isn't complete? crazy!
Also surprised I hadn't heard of this earlier, did anyone else know about it?

I have been following this for the last couple of years. In a nutshell:
Grant Aitken and co managed to get the rights to build a circuit on the land some years ago. The circuit was going to be built with investor money, but would have been slow.
Tony Quin (Owner of VIP Petfoods in Australia) was invited to invest but decided to buy the contract/rights outright and bankroll the project.
(Tony Quin is a very rich man. Him and his son race/own the Australian GT3 class, they have won the NZ Targa 5 times, and are sponsoring a V8 Supercar this year. Net worth I believe is over 200 million).
He built the circuit as a private venue where you can pay to be a member and test your car all year round, any day of the year.
I believe there are going to be 2 – 3 big meetings a year, where he wants to emulate a Bathurst type event for one of them.
There is rumour that one of the big races will be the Aussie GT3 class. I will be there in a flash if that was the case!

Took a guided walk around the circuit in January and it is absolutely fantastic. They can have 3 independent circuits as well as a separate Kart track and a small kids track and a museum. The attention to detail is great.
TG Sports, classic roadster - modern technology. NA1800, 99 head, 11:1 +2mm Wiseco pistons, Link LEM, Alloy f/wheel, JR headers.
Yes, the Aussie GTs are coming in November!
They will probably race on the Sunday. On the Saturday, the South Island Long Distance Series final round will be run...1 and 3 hr races, and I intend to be on the grid!
